2019 Ford Edge Edges Its Way Into Top Crash-Test Tier

According to IIHS, the Edge becomes the first Ford vehicle to earn a 2019 accolade.

To earn a Top Safety Pick award, a vehicle must earn a rating of good — on a scale of good, acceptable, marginal or poor — in five categories: driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. Additionally, it needs to earn a rating of good or acceptable in the passenger-side small overlap front crash test. Available front crash prevention technology — rated on a scale of advanced, superior or basic — must get a grade of advanced or superior. And, finally, at least one set of available headlights must earn an acceptable or good rating. The higher Top Safety Pick Plus award adds the more stringent requirements that the vehicle be rated good for both the passenger-side small overlap front test and for an available set of headlights.
A revised body structure and bumper helped the 2019 Edge earn good ratings in both driver-side and passenger-side small overlap front crash tests; previous model years of the Edge had managed only an acceptable rating in the driver-side test. It also received a score of good in the other crash tests and received a superior rating for its standard and available front crash prevention systems.
What kept the Edge from becoming a Top Safety Pick Plus was its headlights. One available set — curve-adaptive LED projector headlights — was rated acceptable, while its base, static LED projectors managed only a poor rating.
Among its competitors in our recent comparison, the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe is rated as a Top Safety Pick Plus, while the 2019 Honda Passport is a Top Safety Pick. The 2019 Kia Sorento, which did not participate in our comparison, is also a Top Safety Pick Plus.
