Vehicle Overview
Revamped for 2009, the A6 goes on sale in January with new drivetrains, styling changes and many feature upgrades. As before, Audi's midsize model comes as a sedan and a wagon, called the Avant. It competes with the BMW 5 Series, Infiniti M sedan, Lexus GS sedan and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

While the changes aren't obvious, the A6 has gotten new bumpers and fog lights and a new grille design. The headlights are more sharply defined, and as an option, Audi's signature LED daytime running lights put the car in line with other new and recently redesigned models. Though the S6, covered in a separate report, is a souped-up model complete with drivetrain upgrades, you can get an "S-line" sport option on the A6 that lowers the car's ride height by more than an inch and adds exclusive 18-inch wheels and other cosmetic changes.

The interior continues Audi's history of quality materials and craftsmanship, with new aluminum trim on the steering wheel, center console and beyond. The instrument panel has higher-resolution graphics, and the Multi Media Interface is now in its third generation. Its centralized multifunction controller knob and display, Audi says, have more ergonomic menus and layout. The system controls features like the navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity and some climate controls.

Other features include standard keyless entry, bi-xenon headlights and rear sonar parking assist. The interior remains roomy within this class but hasn't grown much over the 2008 model. Nested backseat head restraints improve the driver's rear view.

Under the Hood
All of the A6's available engines now feature direct injection, a proliferating technology that increases power, typically while improving efficiency. EPA estimates aren't available as of this writing, but Audi claims a 15 percent improvement across the model line. Unfortunately, there are no plans to import the European A6's smaller gas or diesel engines, which would give better efficiency. Excluding the S6, which has a V-10 engine, the power plants include a 255-horsepower, 3.2-liter V-6; a 300-hp, supercharged 3.0-liter V-6; and a 350-hp, 4.2-liter V-8.

The Avant comes only with the 3.0-liter engine, a six-speed automatic transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive, the latest version of which sends 60 percent of torque to the rear wheels in normal driving to create a more balanced feel usually associated with rear-wheel-drive cars. The sedan with the 3.2-liter V-6 comes with front-wheel drive and a continuously variable automatic transmission. In the sedan, the small-but-powerful 3.0-liter and the V-8 come with a six-speed automatic and Quattro.

The A6's suspension also has been updated for 2009, improving ride comfort without sacrificing handling, according to Audi. Though it's offered in Europe, an air-spring suspension is currently not an option here.

The usual frontal airbags are supplemented by side-impact airbags for the front seats and side curtain airbags that cover the side windows in both the front and rear. Antilock brakes and an electronic stability system with traction control are standard on both front- and all-wheel-drive models.

New safety options include blind spot detection, which illuminates a light on the side mirror if a car occupies that side's blind spot, and a lane departure warning feature that vibrates the steering wheel if you stray out of your lane.
