our expert's take

Vehicle Overview

The Q7 was Audi’s first foray into the luxury crossover segment, but since its debut the automaker has added the Q5, a smaller and less expensive crossover. The Q7 seats up to seven people in three rows of seats and can be equipped with a gas or diesel V-6. The Q7 competes with the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GL-Class and Acura MDX.

New for 2012
The supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 that powers the Q7 3.0T gains eight horsepower and is now rated at 280 hp. A new S Line Plus Package for Prestige models features 21-inch titanium-finished wheels and matte black roof rails and window surrounds. Meanwhile, the optional navigation system adds Audi Connect capability that includes Google Earth map functionality and Wi-Fi hotspot capability.

Exterior

For a crossover, the Q7 has a relatively sleek profile, and it wears Audi’s signature snout-like grille. Adaptive xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights with LED daytime running lights and a panoramic sunroof are optional. Exterior features include:

  • Standard power liftgate
  • 18-, 19-, 20- or 21-inch wheels

Interior
The Q7’s rear rows of seats fold flat to provide additional storage space. Audi’s optional Multi Media Interface information and navigation system features enhanced voice activation, so you can speak commands such as “I need gas” or “I need coffee,” and the computer will map your closest options. Interior features include:

  • Standard heated leather front seats
  • Standard iPod interface
  • Optional Bang & Olufsen stereo
  • Optional heated steering wheel

Under the Hood
The Q7’s powertrain lineup includes two supercharged gasoline V-6s and a turbocharged diesel V-6, all of which team with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Mechanical features include:

  • 280-hp, supercharged 3.0-liter gas V-6 in 3.0T
  • 333-hp, supercharged 3.0-liter gas V-6 in 3.0T S line
  • 225-hp, turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel V-6 in TDI makes 406 pounds-feet of torque
  • Standard Quattro all-wheel drive
  • Optional adaptive air suspension
  • 6,600-pound maximum towing capacity

Safety
The Q7 has standard side-impact airbags for the front seats, side curtain airbags for all three rows and an electronic stability system. Safety features include:

  • Standard antilock brakes
  • Optional backup camera
  • Optional second-row side-impact airbags

  • Fun new car

It’s a great car and looks a lot newer than its year. Third row is puny for anything other than the occasional kid for carpooling, but it works.

  • One of the most beautiful cars I've ever owned.

Super comfortable vehicle with excellent handling and road feel. It was a pleasure to drive. I actually made up excuses just to drive it! The architecture and styling was beautiful. A perfect fit for me. Proud to drive it.

  • Love Love Love this car

We test drove many 3 row SUVs including the Acura, Lincoln, GMC, Chevy, Ford... and decided on the Q7 and I'm so glad we did and opted for the diesel. I've never really loved a car til this one.

  • The best of all cars and suvs wrapped up in one

The size and weight of the car gives you a secure feel. The exterior is clean and sophisticated. Easy to wash. The interior is well designed easy to operate controls. Leather interior is comfortable with seats being supportive. Second row and third row seating adjust to many hauling options. Love the two sun roofs.

  • Best family SUV for the money!

Love my Q7, lots of leg room and cargo space for what my family needs. Runs great except I wish this model had the air suspension as standard and more HP. The S-Line Prestige package was the one that I really wanted but couldn't find one in good condition so I went ahead and got the premium plus package. This model has less HP and options than the S-Line but it serves my family well for what it is. I would highly recommend anyone that's looking for family SUV to get this, you'll not be disappointed.
