"A well taken-care of BMW 540 with not much over 100K miles - a fantastic second car! Hope to put another 100 on it."

"Overall the best car I have owned in terms of comfort, performance and driver feedback...I think the E39 is still one of the best cars ever made. I had a 2000 540i 6spd with the sport package, purchased with 69k miles and sold with almost 160k. Had the typical water pump failure and a radiator failure. Kept getting leaky Behr radiators that were factory defective. So be sure to replace the water pump, hoses, and radiator if it has not already been done. Older 540i's came with a water pump that had a plastic impeller, replacements have a metal impeller. Front lower control arms are also prone to wear and were close to $300 each. I was able to do all the work myself the E39 540i isn't particularly hard to work on. I feel the horsepower numbers are conservative, I was surprised how fast these beasts (are faster than my 350z). There are a lot of good E39 buyers guides and resources via google."

"Amazing car to drive, and own, but only if you can do the work yourself. Parts are a little more expensive than say a Ford or Toyota, but you are paying for quality."

"E39 540i is one of the best driving cars around. A real head turner. You can take your parents to a field trip, drive all day with comfort. You can go out to a fancy restaurant and you will attract a lot of attention. You can hit the road and do cross country, already planning another long trip with the car. It's the best car I've driven; and I've driven almost everything."
