Expert 2006 BMW 750 review

our expert's take
Our expert's take

our expert's take

The latest edition of BMW’s 750Li sedan may be the perfect car for effortless and entertaining long-distance touring.

The German automaker continues to improve and refine its four-door flagship. Best of all, the big 7 Series receives a rear-end restyling midway through its life cycle, dramatically improving the continuity and look. We tested a well-equipped 2006 750Li with more than $14,000 worth of options and a bottom line of $89,840.

HE: We’ve been driving an awful lot of expensive hardware lately, and it’s easy to get a little too dazzled by some of these wheels. But for some reason, I keep coming back to the 750Li, which I have criticized heavily and frequently in the past. Thank goodness, BMW has listened to some of the critics, including its own customers, and updated the sheet metal, especially that dreadful and disjointed tail. The design department made only modest tweaks to the rear end, but the difference is truly amazing. Now the 7 Series actually looks appealing from most angles — and, of course, the driving dynamics are still as superb as ever.

SHE: You sound like a little boy, gushing over a new BB gun at Christmas. I’m still actually torn when I drive any vehicle that costs more than $40,000 or $50,000 — it’s hard to justify some of those ridiculous price tags. But if you can afford to spend this kind of money, the 750Li is very impressive. Not necessarily warm and fuzzy, like some of my favorite cars, but still a pleasure to drive, especially if you have a long way to travel. And I don’t feel that way about many of the really pricey vehicles we’ve driven lately.

HE: Yes, dear, I can imagine how that troubles your conscience to have to climb behind the wheel of a $90,000 German luxury sport sedan.

SHE: I’ll tell you what doesn’t bother my conscience is BMW’s commitment to safety, a virtue that didn’t get overlooked in the company’s quest to create a great performance car. The standard safety equipment on the 750Li is outstanding — dynamic stability control, dynamic traction control and dynamic brake control, for starters, plus a full complement of air bags and curtains to protect occupants from head to knees. You also get adaptive headlamps, rain-sensing wipers and park distance. I’m not sure there is much else, in the way of active or passive safety hardware, that you could add to this car to improve occupant protection.

HE: Oh, there you go again, talking nuts and bolts. So while we’re on the subject, we might as well point out once again the virtues of BMW’s powerful DOHC 4.8-liter V-8, which makes 360 horsepower and feels like a true thoroughbred — always ready to gallop flat-out at the slightest touch. I’m so glad, too, that BMW fitted its six-speed Steptronic transmission, which is silky smooth, easy to use in either manual or automatic mode and nowhere near as annoying and herky-jerky as the goofy SMG transmission in the M5.

SHE: I’m impressed that a big car with this kind of performance and sports-car handling also rides like a true European luxury car — supple without feeling floaty, firm without feeling harsh. And the 750Li does all these amazing things at about half the price of the Bentley Continental Flying Spur we recently tested. I supposed I’d consider this an even better value, if that’s the right word, if our test car hadn’t been loaded up with more than $14,000 worth of options. I mean, a heated steering wheel for $150 is a nice touch, especially if you have to endure Michigan winters, but do I really need a $2,200 rear entertainment package that comes bundled with a separate iDrive controller for the rear passengers? One iDrive in the front seat is bad enough.

HE: I would agree with you that the BMW is not without its flaws. But this car is so good, it’s easy to overlook most of those shortcomings. For the money, I still think the 750Li is the world’s finest luxury/performance sedan.

Likes: One of the roomiest cabins available in the luxury segment. World-class safety features. Outstanding assembly quality. Extremely comfortable ride. Powerful 4.8L V-8 engine.
Dislikes: Odd shift mechanism requires learning curve. More than $14,000 worth of options pushed the sticker on our test car to nearly $90,000.

Paul: 5
Likes: World’s finest luxury/performance sedan. Amazing rear-seat controls, including a second iDrive. Gorgeous matte wood and metal trim. Superb seats with lots of adjustments. Smooth six-speed automatic. Precise steering and excellent ride control.
Dislikes: Rear armrest needs a pull-down strap — a strange oversight. Rear deck and parcel shelf cut visibility. IDrive requires too many operations for simple functions.

  • This is my 2nd 7 series I first had a 2002 745i i missed

This is my 2nd 7 series I first had a 2002 745i i missed it as soon as i was forced to trade it in. I’ve since owned a beautiful 2006 750Li hands down the most luxurious sedans ever made. It literally rivals a Rolls today. Best value for your money, looks great both inside and outside. It is amazingly comfortable and easy to drive. I will buy this car before any other car in it’s class. I love the comfort after a long day at work, it’s actually great on gas and the maintenance is less than I thought and can be easily done and cost-effectively. I love the fact on the steptronic transmission, if you can find a model with one, you can go in the settings and change the drive mode into a Luxury BEAST! I drive this from NY to Atlanta with ease..I will own a BMW for the rest of my blessed life driving it is my pleasure remember its made for road trips talking about beauty and a beast. Its truly is the ultimate driving machine. I love it

  • One of the best cars ever made to this day!

One of the best cars ever made to this day! Rivals rolls royce and the most comfortable ride of any SUV sized luxury sedan. You literally dont hear nor feel the engine and barely feel the ground when driving. This is the car they send for Emirates first class passengers. Just like any car in this age range, a basic car check with a mechanic will tell you if the engine has problems or leaks. Get a solid one from a devoted owner and you will never want to ride another car. This is the most luxury and value for a powerhouse car that you will ever find. We have owned 3 smaller and newer Bmws and 2 Mercedes and a Honda over the years. This 750Li is the one that lasted, drives the best and looks just like the day I got it. This is the one the whole family wants to ride in. Its safer than any SUV much bigger than most and none ofthe risk of tipping or flips. It's phenomenal. The poor reviews for older german or sports cars like this one are from people who didn't inspect it before buying and did just poor or no maintenance. This car maintence costs less than a Honda and much less frequent. I take this car in for basic maintence once or twice a year. You can grab brand new original parts from your mechanic or grab online from nationwide dealerships and save even more. Bmws if you just do the basic maintence, you will never fix the same thing again and you wont have any major issues that you read about. That's the beauty of german cars. This particular engine was built by space engineers. Top of the line luxury that rivals the best luxury cars today, convenience, seamless ride plus any full coverage insurance is lower on this than any luxury car with its features. My neighbor had one and had an accident and they walked away because this car is a tank that glides and easy smooth swift maneuvering of a small car. If you find a good one, don't even hesitate.

  • Car is to cost efficient

I bought this car for $5,200 and in first week the transmission went out and cost me $7,100 rebuilt. I had the plugs and coils done and it's still skipping. The thermostat stuck closed and fan stop working.

  • 2006 Model year is a money Pit and disappointment

I was lucky to find one with only 19,000 miles. It drives wonderfully. It is everything you want in a car then the problems start. First with the tires. Front and back are two different sizes. If you live in an area with many pot holes the rims will crack. The car strongly recommends run flat tires(super expensive even for regular ty oh e tires cause of the size. Right side signal light doesn’t work just to look at it will cost you hundreds. In fact anything at the dealership will run over $400.00 and you may still have the problem. The entire front bumper must be removed to get to the light. If you live in an area that gets very hot 90 degrees f. It will play havoc on all your electronics. Also. Many critical parts are made out of plastic you will be shocked to learn. And these parts do not hold up on hot climates at all. The ABS system is known to fail. The transmission is known to fail. The computer brain is known to fail. The battery is expensive and if you don’t put the correct one (but a cheaper one) you will end up paying more later for all the problems it causes. You can spend well over $10k to get the car running well and still end up stuck on the road. Unfortunately.

  • Great car for the price if you can afford it

Love this car. Literally feel like I stole it for what I paid vs new. But it is a BMW so you have to be mechanically inclined or have a warranty or be rich. I have had a few issues but was able to handle everything myself.

  • Most Luxurious car I've ever owned

Super Luxurious Vehicle, beautiful, powerful, comfortable, reliable. I was a bit hesitant by a car this old at first, but was so happy I did. It had every amenity you could thing of and then some. The car turned out to be super reliable, and have had to do nothing to it other than change the oil, and basic standard maintenance. The service departments at BMW are incredibly knowledgeable and accommodating too. All in all one of the best cars I've ever owned.

Great car if you have an extra car to drive when you take it to your mechanic. I have been driving BMW's since 1983, and will not be buying another. Transmission and motor is not like the old ones. They ran forever
