The 2014 Cadillac CTS gets a significant redesign, employing considerable use of aluminum and lightweight design techniques to make a larger, lower, yet lighter car than the one it replaces. Right now only the sedan has been unveiled; there is no word on whether a coupe and wagon will rejoin the lineup. Rear-wheel drive is standard with all-wheel drive an option.
Styling is an evolution of the two previous models. Three powertrain combinations are available, including a turbocharged four-cylinder, naturally aspirated V-6 and GM's first-ever twin-turbocharged V-6. The turbocharged V-6 is included in a new Vsport model that's meant to bridge the gap between the top of the CTS line and the supercharged V-8 CTS-V. An all-new and larger interior now features the Cadillac User Experience touch-screen multimedia and information system.
Styling is a further refinement of Cadillac's "Art and Science" theme. The creases and angles that marked the first two generations have been softened considerably, supposedly to appeal to an international audience. The new CTS features a long, low hood and distinctive character lines that start at the front bumper and continue to the rear. It's 5 inches longer than the old one, with a 1-inch extension in the wheelbase for a bigger interior.
No fewer than eight different color schemes will be available, with trim featuring real wood, real aluminum or real carbon fiber. All of that trim can also be swapped out by the dealer, allowing for an even greater level of personalization by customers. The CUE system is standard on all models, featuring a capacitive touch-screen.
Under the Hood
The base engine is a 272-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 295 pounds-feet of torque and is good for an estimated 30 mpg highway in rear-wheel-drive models (all-wheel drive is an option).
The midlevel engine is a 321-hp, 3.6-liter V-6, making 275 pounds-feet of torque.
The top trim engine is a new twin-turbocharged version of the 3.6-liter V-6, making a hefty 420 hp and 430 pounds-feet of torque.
For both V-6 models, rear-wheel-drive versions come with a new eight-speed automatic transmission, while the all-wheel-drive non-turbo V-6 comes with the six-speed (the twin-turbo V-6 is not available with all-wheel drive).
The twin-turbo engine comes with a new trim level. The Vsport is meant to bridge the gap between the 321-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 and the fire-breathing 556-hp, supercharged V-8 in the CTS-V. The Vsport will feature 18-inch wheels, a quicker steering ratio, Brembo brakes front and rear, a Track mode for the transmission, a heavy-duty cooling system, an electronic limited-slip differential and Cadillac's Magnetic Ride Control active suspension.
A full list of electronic safety system features is available, including 10 standard airbags, OnStar, front-and-rear automatic braking that employs radar and ultrasonic sensors to help prevent collisions, automatic park assist, vibrating Safety Alert Seat, automatic seat belt tensioners, forward collision alert, lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert and full-speed adaptive cruise control.
