Vehicle Overview

Chevrolet's iconic sports car, the Corvette, has been redesigned for the 2014 model year. With the launch of the seventh-generation version the Stingray name returns, and the car is powered by a new 6.2-liter V-8 engine that makes an estimated 450 horsepower. The 2014 Corvette hits dealerships in the third quarter of 2013, and competitors include the Ford Shelby GT500 and Nissan GT-R.

(Skip to details on the: Corvette Convertible)

ExteriorThe 2014 Corvette forgoes some of the car's traditional design cues and in the process attains a more muscular, modern look. The car's new face is reminiscent of another great American sports car: the all-new SRT Viper. From the exposed headlights, which include sleek LED accents, to the gaping lower grille, there's more than a passing resemblance to the reborn Viper. While the Viper has a hulking look to it, the Corvette's lines give the design a sharp precision — especially the body sides with their defined rocker creases and shoulder lines. With the reintroduction of the Stingray name to the car, there's also a Stingray badge aft of the front fender vents.

The car's rear styling represents a big departure from the past, with a design that ditches the circular taillights that have been used on Corvettes for years in favor of a more rectangular style that's vaguely similar to the current Camaro's. The new taillights combine with a tall rear diffuser that eliminates some of the slab-sidedness for which late-model Corvettes have been known. Familiar quad exhaust tips round out the tail. Exterior features include:

  • Hood and removable roof panel made of carbon fiber
  • High-intensity-discharge headlights with LED accents
  • LED taillights
  • Functional hood vent
  • 18-inch front and 19-inch rear wheels (19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels with Z51 Performance Package)

InteriorThe Corvette's all-new interior has a driver-focused layout and incorporates high-tech features like a configurable 8-inch screen in the instrument cluster in addition to an 8-inch screen in the middle of the dashboard. A color head-up display is available.

The previous sixth-generation Corvette was frequently criticized for having subpar interior quality but Chevrolet has made significant improvements in the new car. Available materials include Nappa leather upholstery, aluminum and carbon fiber. The quality looks similar to some of Chevy's newest models like the 2014 Impala full-size sedan as opposed to reaching into the realm of Cadillac luxury. Interior features include:

  • Smaller-diameter steering wheel for improved feel
  • Comfort-oriented GT seats or aggressively bolstered Competition seats, both of which have magnesium seat frames for better rigidity
  • Available premium stereo with two subwoofers

Under the HoodPower comes from a new 6.2-liter V-8 engine that makes an estimated 450 hp and 450 pounds-feet of torque. Dubbed LT1, the engine utilizes direct injection, cylinder deactivation and continuously variable valve timing. The engine drives the rear wheels through a seven-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

The Corvette comes with a Driver Mode Selector that has five settings: Weather, Eco, Tour, Sport and Track. Turning the system's knob adjusts 12 vehicle systems, from instrument panel graphics to power-steering assist. Mechanical features include:

  • Manual transmission's active rev match feature automatically blips the throttle to achieve the appropriate engine speed for an upcoming shift
  • Brembo-brand brakes
  • Available Magnetic Selective Ride Control
  • Available dual-mode exhaust system
  • Z51 Performance Package adds an electronic limited-slip differential, dry-sump oil system, transmission and differential heat exchangers, cooling ducts for the brakes, a unique rear spoiler and more air deflectors

SafetySafety features include:

  • Antilock brakes
  • Electronic stability system

Corvette Convertible
Chevrolet developed the Corvette Stingray convertible simultaneously with the coupe to maintain the car's driving dynamics without a rigid top. Often, convertibles need chassis strengthening to replace rigidity lost by removing the fixed roof. Chevrolet says the only structural changes to the Corvette convertible are limited to accommodations for the folding top and repositioned safety belt mounts.

The droptop features a standard power-folding cloth top with sound-absorbing padding and a glass rear window to help reduce noise in the cabin. The top opens and closes at speeds up to 30 mph and can retract via the remote key fob. Similar to modern Corvette generations, a "waterfall" extension of the body-colored tonneau cover extends into the passenger compartment between the seats.

Like the coupe, the convertible is powered by a 450-horsepower, 6.2-liter V-8 making an estimated 450 pounds-feet of torque. A carbon fiber hood and genuine carbon fiber interior and aluminum highlights also carry over. Convertible buyers have the option of a Z51 Performance Package with electronic limited-slip differential, dry-sump oiling system, brake, differential and transmission coolers plus an aerodynamic package. Transmission options include a seven-speed manual or six-speed automatic. Back to top
