Vehicle Overview
Editor's note: What follows is preliminary information on the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel. Check back later for full details.
New for 2014, Chevrolet is bringing a diesel engine to the Cruze compact sedan. The Cruze Diesel will be powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel four-cylinder, making just 148 horsepower but a significant 258 pounds-feet of torque. That power is channeled through a standard six-speed automatic transmission, and is expected to deliver 42 mpg highway and a zero-to-60 time of 8.6 seconds.
The engine also features an "overboost" mode for stronger acceleration that will produce 280 pounds-feet for 10 seconds. The diesel model uses an emissions treatment called selective catalytic reduction, which uses a special tank of urea-based fluid to cut down on harmful gasses. The SCR tank is reportedly good for 10,000 miles at a fill and is designed to be refilled when the vehicle gets oil changes; unfortunately, it also reduces the trunk space by 2 cubic feet.
Outwardly the Cruze Diesel looks just like a regular Cruze. Seventeen-inch wheels will be standard, as will a leather interior. The model will start at $25,695, including an $810 destination charge, putting it nearly $1,500 more than its main competitor, the Volkswagen Jetta TDI.
