Expert 2000 Ford Crown Victoria review

our expert's take

Police forces traditionally have favored big, affordable, rear-drive V-8 sedans. There’s a lot of room in them for felons and doughnuts, and they have enough power to catch most of the bad guys.

Alas, the years have not been kind to the sub-luxury subspecies of Gigantis Reardrivicus. Chrysler stopped building one back in the ’80s. The Chevy Caprice tossed in its greasy towel in the mid-’90s.

That leaves the Ford Crown Victoria to reign alone as – a flourish of clarions here – America’s police car.

“The Crown Vic has sales of between 110,000 and 120,000 a year, and 50 to 60 percent of those are for police car service,” reports George Pipas, a Ford sales analyst.

The Crown Vic Police Interceptor model accounts for 85 percent of the cars sold for use as police pursuit vehicles in the United States and Canada, according to Ford.

Actually, the Crown Vic is not just beloved by the gendarmes. It also has a mature fan club that appreciates a powerful, roomy, comfortable car that can tow a lot – and does not make its clientele float a bond to buy it.

Consider: The Crown Vic starts at $22,100. The well-equipped, top-of-the-line LX model that I tested was base-priced at $24,120. Even after the PR operatives got out there with pitchforks and loaded it up with just about every available option, the Vic weighed in at $28,215, including shipping.

It had been a while since I was in America’s police car, and frankly, I did not expect to be impressed.

I was. The test car proved lively and athletic for a two-ton sedan.

Part of that engine zip and cornering competence was courtesy of an optional handling and engine performance package. In addition to replacing the standard, 16-inch steel rims with some handsome alloy ones, this inexpensive ($615) package tweaks the Vic in a number of ways.

The package’s dual exhausts raise the horsepower rating of the car’s gutsy, 4.6-liter V-8 from 200 to 215. A lower differential ratio further boosts acceleration.

To improve handling, the package equips the car with performance tires, and stiffens the suspension with bigger stabilizer bars, revised shock absorbers, and rear air springs, which also provide automatic load leveling. (About the only performance-oriented hardware that does not get massaged is the braking system. With huge standard discs at all four corners, it does not need any.)

The net result is a big, old sedan that addresses the corners in an unexpectedly flat and composed manner – and does not exact a hard-ride trade-off.

In addition to performing nicely, the Crown Vic is comfortable company. It easily seats six in its quiet cabin, and provides them with plenty of room for their luggage in its cavernous trunk.

Ford has been making the Crown Vic for a long time, and it shows. It shows in the way it is screwed together, and in the small amount of aggravation it causes its customers. (It was among J.D. Power & Associa tes’ top 10 quality vehicles last year.)

Gas mileage is pretty good for a car that weighs this much. The Crown Vic has EPA mileage ratings of 18 m.p.g. city and 25 highway. I got 19.8 in mixed driving.

The Crown Vic, finally, is not a sports car, but acquits itself surprisingly well in the performance department, particularly when fitted with the handling package. It is not a beautiful car, but it has a certain utilitarian dignity.

What it is is a large, strong, durable automobile that can tow boats and campers, and carry a lot of friends (or felons) and doughnuts.

  • It was a car

Ahhh yes, the car that got me through highschool. Cheap, rusted, a/c didn't work, uncomfortable, no center console, ex police interceptor with "94,000" miles. Drove it 10 months and never had an issue. Funny because after I sold it the new owner said she had multiple issues. Oh well.

  • Amazing first car!

I've been a car enthusiast my entire life. Ever since I was old enough to start collecting hotwheels I've always loved learning about cars and how they impact cultures. When it finally came time for me to buy a car, my budget was somewhat conservative (under $2500). However, I still wanted something that really resonated with me. Thankfully, I found a 2000 CVPI for $2500. It was a detective's car, so it had relatively low miles. What an amazing first car! It's fast, but not so fast that it's gonna kill me. Handling is tight, and the ride is very comfortable. It's a massive car, and this has been very helpful for camping trips and things of that nature. Also, the engine sounds positively intoxicating. It's been two years now and I still haven't grown tired of the growl produced by that 4.6. If you're looking for a car that you can truly love, but don't want to break the bank, then the Crown Vic is for you.

  • Best easy to maintain car I've owned.

The V8 engine is quiet and rides smooth. Just between performance and comfort the Crown Victoria is a exellent value.

  • Nice ride, Nice Price

I got this car very cheap and was a steal. It is very realiable. The performance is good but it is a gas guzzler. But, taking off from the light is a nice experience. Its like an old muscle car.

  • RELIABLE!

Bought an ex-taxi Crown Vic with 716,325 miles on it. Yes you read that correctly. I work at a place with no gaurds on the parking lot and no security system. Since I work inside all day long I cant drive my Audi to work so I bought this 01 Model Vic just as a work car and nothing else. Its about a 20 minute commute and I have been doing it for a couple of years now. The car now has 747,500 on it and I have had no mechanical issues. The reliability has amazed me. The power is not what you expect from a 4.6 but it has a nice even torque curve and dosen't really have you asking for more, and the fuel economy is great for a car of this size. I get about 30mpg most of the time but about 32-33 with the cruise control set. As for the RWD I was amazed how well it did in the snowy winters I have. All in all this car is the best value for money you will find anywhere. I

  • former copcars are the best!

I really like the handling of this car! It's the second Crown Victoria I've owned in the last fifteen years and even though it was a retired police car with 162,000 miles, I still snapped it up about six weeks ago. I've had no problems with it so far and even the Pennsylvania state inspectors commented on the good reputation of these cars.

  • Great Road Car

While this big car is not my style, I've really come to appreciate it over the 3 years I've driven it. It's a super comfortable ride, 2nd only to a Lincoln, & has a huge trunk, seats 5 comfortably & 6 in a pinch. For its size, it has a lot of pep and is fun to drive, yet decent gas mileage. Incredibly reliable even w/150k miles. Love the auto climate control & luxury features. Three things I don't like: wide turning radius; when front seats are back, rear passengers are crowded; insufficient cup holders.

  • great car

Great car. The only problem is it guzzles too much fuel. Many friends don't understand why I bought such a large car. But every time I drive my car, I feel safe. And it is easy to handle. I don't like those small cars, since they are too light. Besides, it is much cheaper than Japanese cars. Along with driving for year, the money saved will offset the cost for the fuel, while the safty and comfort remain.

  • Best Car Ever

Love this car. I bought it new in Michigan, drove it to FL several times before we finally moved down here. General Maintenance is all I've ever had to do on it. Love the air conditioning system, especially the quick cooloff when getting into a hot car. Even my sister wishes her Caddy had my cooling system. I've been offered many $$$ for it but not giving this one up. The only complaint is the less than smooth handling like I had on my Olds 98. Cornering is a bit rough. Comfort is good but not much knee room in the rear seat. Trunk is huge and holds alot. I have even brought home a dishwasher in it

  • MY LAST FIVE CARS WAS CRWN VICS

I PURCHASED MY FIRST NEW CRWN VIC IN 1989, A LOVED IT TOTALLY , SOME HOW THRU THE YEARS THE FORD HAS REDUCED THE COMFORT OF THE CAR, THE BACK SEAT HAS LESS KNEE ROOM , I AM 5'8" and HAVE VERY LITTLE KNEE ROOM ,THE RIDE IS MUCH STIFF ON BUMPS. I STILL HAVE A "89" CROWN VIC AND THE DIFFERENCE IS LIKE NIGHT AND DAY. I AM "SIXTY SIX" AND I STILL LIKE THE CROWN VICS ESPECIALLY THE NEW STYLES.
