"This vehicle is poor on gas mileage and even poorer on holding the road, no matter what the weather. So you really need to be on your toes when you are driving this so it doesnt drive you. Comfort was good as was cargo area."

"I've owned 2 of these vehicles - a '99 and '01. Both were decent in terms of performance until about 90,000 miles. That's when the trouble starts. Little things start breaking in a sucession and it becomes a chain reaction almost. I can't complain about the room inside. If you need a vehicle to haul things, move, or tow the Explorer is nice as far as SUVs go. However, the interior design in the driver's area isn't really great. One big issue is the arm rest/compartment in the middle. Very easy to break and expensive to fix. Gage readers fail readily in dashboard. I had one go in each vehicle. Gas mileage is obviously not stellar. When I bought my '99 I got about 23mpg city and 26mpg on hwy, but that drops as the vehicle ages. My '01 gets about 20mpg city and 24 hwy."

"Rides great on wide upgraded tires, 265/70R15. The front seats are nice with tons of head room, and since I am 6'3, I also like the straight side windows that keep all hard objects away from my head. I forgot about how bad the freeway visibility and back pain induced by a small car are. The back seats are spacious but hard and the ride back there is bumpy since the rear suspension has spring leafs. I hardly ever use them. With the rear seats folded, the flat area in the back is almost queen bed sized. Short wheel base makes it less stable on the freeway, yet it can do U-turns in most streets, parking is a joy. Tight turning and over-assisted steering makes high speed sharp turns dangerous, especially if the brakes are applied at the same time. The engine has great torque for start-ups and high speed passing. It is speed limited at 100mph. It has less wind/road noise than an Escape! 18mpg on the average and a small fuel tank gives it only a 250+ mile range. Nothing broke in 6 years and 80K miles. Nice big brakes means they last 40K."

"I love my car! From the way it runs, to it's style and the comfort it provides, this SUV has met and exceeded my expectations of what I want in an automobile. There's a big difference coming from a low-seated sedan to the elevated view and security I feel driving this car. I have no desire to be in any other automobile. I feel confident and safe behind the wheel. It's roomy ride is perfect for my active lifestyle. I usually ride with one other passenger but there's plenty of space for another 2-3 people in the backseat, not to mention the cargo area which is plentiful. My car is so well regarded amongst my friends, it's the vehicle of choice when it comes to deciding who drives on road trips. Lucky me, I guess."
