Consumer Reviews
"Bought new and has 150k. Led's on radio and direction/temp readouts have failed. Tie rod went bad. The timing chain tensioner has failed twice. The auto door lock system has a current problem. Top of the line shocks and tires helped bone jarring rear suspension. Reliable otherwise, holding up ok"

"I bought this car used about a year ago and must have spent about 3500 fixing all the problems. at first it was just running rough and had a tune up then my break line was leaking then I noticed when I started it up in the morning it would run really rough and going on the highway it seemed like my transmission was going but no it was my head gasket and was told by about 10 car lots that they would not even consider doing it on this year explorer because it was too difficult. I ended up having to get an engine and I was to get rid if this piece of junk as soon as I can I will never get a ford again."

"My wife and I have a the 99 XLT 4x4 Model and we have been driving it for a year now, no major problems just the normal rotor/pad/shocks replacement. I have no complains on this SUV at all, very smooth on and off the road, lots of power and great in the winter. Everything works fine and has not failed."

"Always wanted an explorer and finally bought a used one and now wish i hadnt. It is a 1999 4x4 xlt, 4.0 sohc engine with 60,000 miles. It ran good for about a year then went downhill from there. First the doorhandles stopped working for the back doors, then while hunting it stopped running and i had to walk a couple of miles back to the camp. The garage told me it was a fuse that controls something with the transmission which i never heard of. About a month after that is stopped running again and had to be towed again. This time they told me it was the map sensor. The next one is the best one of all, the oil pump went out and toasted the engine. The engine had 75000 miles on it and now is a big paper weight. With the help of family and friends i was able to buy a used engine and install it for about 800. So if you are looking at buying one i would steer clear."

"I purchased a 99 Explorer XLT in April of 2006, and the only complaint I have is the back seats bracket rattles when you go a certain speed due to road vibrations at that speed, and in Seattle it seems to be 55-70. The rear fold down seats are one of the best features that I have seen in any comparable SUV in the year range and size range of this 99 Explorer. All in all the 215 HP 5.0L V8 just screams when going down the freeway and just wants to take off when only going 35 on city streets. Another beautiful thing is that the leather is in almost pristine condition which to me says that they used good leather for the interior (the previous owner was a business, so i know the interior took a bit of a beating) Overall I give this car an A+"

"THERE WASN'T ONE THING ON THIS RIG THAT DIDN'T GO WRONG AFTER IT WAS PURCHASED. MESSED UP BRAKES, MESSED UP POWER WINDOWS, MESSED UP LIGHTING SYSTEM, MESSED UP DOOR LOCKS, NOTHING LIKE GOING SHOPPING, AND THE ONLY DOOR THAT WILL OPEN WHEN YOU COME OUT TO LEAVE, IS THE BACK HATCH, HAD TO CRAWL UP TO THE DRIVERS SEAT AND STILL COULD NOT GET THE DRIVER DOOR OPEN FROM THE INSIDE OR THE OUT, RIGHT ALONG WITH THE DRIVER PASSENGER DOOR. ALL DOOR HANDLES HAVE MALFUNCTIONED, PASSENGER SIDE FRONT BRAKES ARE MESSED UP, ALONG WITH THE SHOCK AND THE TIE ROD, THE REAR DRIVE SHAFT HAS A BENT YOKE SO U-JOINTS DO NOT ASSEMBLE PROPERLY, SO THAT MADE A LOUD CLUNKING NOISE AFTER A PERIOD OF TIME, BACK HATCH LATCH IS MESSED UP SO THE DOOR AJAR LIGHT STAYS ON ALL THE TIME, ALL THE POWER WINDOWS AND DOOR LOCKS HAVE HAD TROUBLE, DOME LIGHT WILL NOT GO OFF AFTER YOU SHUT VEHICLE OFF SO YOU HAVE TO SHUT THE DIMMER SWITCH DOWN, I CAN GO ON AND ON WITH MAJOR TROUBLE THAT THIS VEHICLE HAS, AND THE TIMES IT HAS LEFT ME STRANDED. BOTTOM LINE I HAVE NEVER LIKED FORD AND THEY ARE THE JUNK THAT I HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT THEY WERE. I FOUND OUT THE HARD WAY BY ALLOWING ONE OF MY FRIENDS TO CONVINCE ME THAT THE NEWER FORDS WERE MADE ALOT BETTER. WHAT A JOKE THAT WAS."
