"Wish I had gone on line and looked up the 2004 explorer. I would have found out that it must have the worst transmission of any other car on the road. Six weeks afterI bought it the tranny started shifting into reverse after about a five second delay, with a loud thud. Foward gears wanted to shft about all at the same time. Thank God I bought the warranty. New tranny was $2600."

"We bought ours in 2006 w/33K miles. It runs like a top, have never had any major problems with it. Cloth seats are easy to clean, exterior still shines like a new dime. Gas mileage could be better, but overall we are very happy with our very reliable truck!"

"Just got a 2004 Red Ford Explorer XLT. After an accident in my Jeep Grand Cherokee. Although the Jeep was awsome off road, it gave me a ton of mechanical problems, ex. Engine, fuel injector, starter. And so on. My Ford has given me none of that.. biggest positives: seating for seven and the fold down third row, pleanty of sleeping room with backrows folded down for camping, high tow rating for yard work and travling, All wheel drive is a god send in mud and snow, ground clearence of 8+ inches. I wish I had goten a V-8 for power and get up and go. Overall the mpgs is pretty good around 23. I am very happy with my descion. Would recomnen highly! Enoy. Happy travels."

"I bought this SUV used when it only had 30,000 miles on it and It has 82,000 now and the only thing I have replaced was the tires, battery, and brake lights. It is very comfortable and drives like a dream, the rear air is very powerful. The front A/c is my only complaint as it seams a little weak but the rear air is so powerful it cools the car down quick even when sitting in the back third row. I love this truck and will drive it untill it can't drive anymore."

"I bought this truck as I wanted to drive a Full size Ford SUV. And Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer was my best bet!! It is one solid truck! Very sturdy and very comfirtable ride on freeways! I'll give it a 4.5 out of a 5! (0.5 less because of the gas mileage...but hey... if you are worried about the mpg ..why drive a ford! :))"

"I owned this truck scene it was new, I dealer mainted it I live in the northeast so vehicles don't last long cause of the salt air. I have 182,438 mile on the truck original engine trans and differentials the body has no rust one it I wash it once a week and wax it twice a year ALL FLUIDS ARE CHANGED ACCORDING TO MANUFACTURE SPEC'S which is something people don't do they just think you have to change the oil and thats it!!!! I don't think so!!! I was a mechanic for 45 years retired now but I still see people not taking care of there vehicles I have seen Toyota get 200,000 miles cause the people took care of them I have never seen a Toyota get over 200,000 and never take care of it. its all in how you take care it!!! read your owners manual and maintenance manual it will be a small price to pay with a big return. heck I proved with all my cars and trucks all fords and all got over 200,000 I still have my 1996 Explorer with 312,334 its does have a new trans it only has 1675 miles on it the body is starting to go but what do you want out of 14 year old truck I will probably get another three years out of it well I hope this helps people to understand what quality is. if a truck isn't maintained then its the owners fault not the SUV so why blame the truck !!!!"

"I got mine 2 mos ago w/24,000 miles. The car was fine but the dealer was a little sketchy --my perfect interior had a rip in passenger seat (they knocked off $600)when I came back after putting a deposit the week before and the larger side of the 2nd row handle is broken which I discovered trying to move a fridge. I see what they mean about trans--it's does a little thunk thing in reverse, but so far the fwd gears are smooth. It's very smooth on the highway. I'm in city, but even still, it burns more gas that I expected for a low mileage V6. My old isuzu trooper w/243k miles and 3.2 liter seems to burn about the same, though the 4wd is not full-time like with the Explorer...maybe that's the culprit. The seat belt reminder is annoying, so just put it on. The column gear shifter is rubber coated and it rubs the column, and the rubber coating on the shifter seems to be rubbing off. I bought a warranty based on the trans stuff I've read about. Good news is my neighbor on the same block has one and she reports no problems and she bought hers new. That made me give ford a chance. It is also true that people with bad experiences tend to write on these things and people w/no probs tend to not. So, we'll see what happens. Besides the issues from a used car dealer that lets gorillas move used cars in their lot, I love it."

"I bought this Suv after my sister totalled my first brand new Ford Focus. I wish I still had my Focus. At least I knew I could trust it to get to work without breaking down. Bought Explorer with 90,000 miles on it. LOVE the outside and the interior. Fully loaded and extremely comfortable, my kids love the DVD player. That's where the good stuff ends. 10,000 miles later, the engine blew! Right before the engine went, I was having trouble getting power going up hill. Found out the Cat converters were plugged and 1600 bucks later, it still wasn't right. You cannot replace just the one Cat converter. Its an entire Y shaped unit that must be purchased as a whole, not just the converter. So after it was fixed, I went another week and the engine went caput on my way to work, up a hill. Had another engine installed! 2,000 bucks later... Kept having a clunk went I up hills. Another visit to a repair shop to find out the rear mount was going out. AND.... my transmission is now going. Major issues driving down the road with or without cruise on, the vehicle feels like it doesn't get enough gas but I am being told its the tranny going out. Everything else has been replaced in this thing and I have had nothing but issues. I understand and realize I got a "lemon" from the dealer but was told there are NO lemon laws in the state of Nevada so I am now stuck with this thing. I will be trading it in, the moment I can! Even after all the problems, I still love the inside and the comfy-ness but do not care to spend another dime on the dang thing to fix it, yet I know I will. Be very wary of this vehicle. It may end up costing you more in the end, then its worth."
