"I looked for a used pickup truck for utility for about 3 months. The best value I could find was the Ford F150. For whatever reason, supply maybe, F150 was less expensive than GM or Chrystler. When you buy a car online, make sure you set aside enough cash for repairs. Let's face it, the reason used cars are for sale is because someone is unloading a problem. So, as long as you know that and put aside some cash for repairs, you wont be disappointed with your new ride. So, found the pickup with a low price "as is". I checked out the truck and decided to buy it. It was 2005 model and got it for under 6k. So, must be something wrong right? Yeah, there was. The rear differential seal and bearing needed to be replaced. That's an expensive job and that's why the price was what it was. Anyway, after the repair and new tires for an additional 1k, I have a truck that's well worth the money under 7k."

2005 F150 is Sweet

"Recently purchased a 2005 extended-cab short box (5.5') Lariat 4x4 F150 and couldn't be happier with it. Interior room is awesome - I've been waiting for a vehicle that I don't feel cramped in, and this is it! Leather bench seat is extremely comfortable. The console shifter in some trucks looks great, but I went with a column shifter and flip-up arm-rest seat so I could get six in it if I need to. My two teenage daughers love riding in the back seat. My wife also loves riding in it because of all the room and how high up you sit. Can't believe how quiet it is inside - it sounds/feels like a luxury sedan. Engine sounds great - although there is a bit of valve-train clatter at startup that seems to be relatively common with the 5.4L 3V. Went with the short-box to keep down the length and am happy I did. It's a big truck and I think it manuvers better without the extra foot of bed. I also like the look of it this way - although I suspect some might not. In general, I was very impressed that the 2004MY+ trucks I looked at had very little underbody rust. I looked at a couple Ram's and they both had solid rust covering everything on the underbody. Fuel economy is probably the only thing that I wish was a bit different. I get 13-14mpg driving around town and 17mph highway (and I baby it a bit). I've got the 3.73 axle ratio and 18" tires which will be good for pulling, but hurts in the FE area. Oh well, that's what you get with a truck, right? Purchased from a private seller - definitely the way to go versus some high priced dealerships. CARS.COM was very helpful in finding sellers. Wouldn't change a thing!"

"I have a F150 HD with 153,000 miles on it and manage a fleet of Ford trucks. Have F150's with almost 300,000 miles on them in the fleet. 4.6 good motor 5.4 ok motor Issues, 5.4 3 valve motor must be maintained regularly. Change spark plugs every 50,000 Oil changes with partial synthetic good filter. If the check engine light comes on take it in! Cam phaser is at the end of the oiling system and can get clogged easily. When they gum up it can cause the timing to be off enough to allow the valves to strike the piston. Transmission also must have regular maintenance. Most failures due to clogged oil cooler. Wheel wobbles Due to rotors being pulled off and turned. Ford recommends having them turned on the vehicle or replaced. Bearings cannot be retightened. This is not your grandpas Ford. They are more like a Mercedes. Cost more to maintain, Parts must be replaced per recommended interval. If it breaks it will cost you $$$. Gets better mileage. If you want a bullet proof truck you will have to find a mid-90?s or older Ford or Chevy."

"I bought my XLT 4.6L super cab in 2004.5 when they changed the body style. To date the only issue I had was a bad pulley that was replaced within warranty as well as a rattle in my AC fan. My truck has towed a camper from AZ to Yellowstone and back and all over Az. While the 4.6 is weaker than the 5.4 it still tows nice (spark plug replacement is much cheaper too). I took it to a dealership for a checkup and I got green lights all around. Only minor things that have broke are auto window motor on two doors, and the 3rd break light seal seems to wear out and let the water in but online tips have fixed that. Overall super satisfied with my purchase. I think ill put on another 100,000 miles before I get another vehicle, most likely another f 150!"

"I have an 04 f150 fx4 that I bought new and now have 90k on it....other than tires and brakes...i have had only a few minor problems. I've had a window motor go out. I had a leak in the third brake light...but ordered a replacement on amazon....two minute fix. I would recommend replacing the brake light every 4-6 years to avoid leaks. I also had a plugged air conditioner drain...also a cheap fix. Will keep this truck forever. My son is now driving it."
