Expert 2007 Ford Freestyle review

Vehicle Overview
Ford calls the Freestyle a crossover model because it blends the merits of a sport utility vehicle, a minivan and a sedan. Ford notes that the overall design is “more sculpted than chiseled, more capable than rugged,” so the Freestyle is “definitely not a minivan.” To head off such comparisons, Ford points out the Freestyle’s long hood, high belt line and flared wheel arches.

Like the related Five Hundred sedan, the Freestyle has midsize dimensions that approach full-size. It comes in base SE, midrange SEL and top-level Limited trim levels. For 2007, four new packages offer more options for SEL and Limited models. Two new exterior colors are also offered: Alloy Metallic and Dune Pearl Metallic.

Exterior
The Freestyle has a long hood, high belt line, trapezoidal mesh grille, “grille guard”-style lower fascia, flared wheel arches and large side mirrors. The rear features a split hatch and step bumper.

Fog lamps and body-colored door handles are included on the SEL and Limited. Built on a 112.9-inch wheelbase, the Freestyle is 200.1 inches long overall. SE and SEL models ride on 17-inch aluminum wheels, and the Limited gets 18-inch wheels. Limited models have a monochromatic exterior and heated exterior mirrors. All Freestyles have a fully independent suspension.

Interior
Three rows of seats hold six or seven occupants. Ford says upright “command” seating eases entry and exit and produces maximum visibility. The third-row seat folds flat into the floor. Either reclining and sliding bucket seats or a 60/40-split, folding bench can be installed in the second row.

A dashboard-mounted grab handle for the front passenger adds SUV style to the Freestyle. A covered storage bin sits atop the dashboard. The gearshift lever is mounted on the console, which has a power adapter to charge portable devices.

With all the seats folded — including the front-passenger seat — the Freestyle offers more than 9.5 feet of pass-thru storage. Cargo space totals 15.2 cubic feet behind the third-row seat.

A six-CD changer and leather-wrapped steering wheel go into the SEL. The Limited gets heated front seats, an Audiophile sound system and perforated leather seating surfaces. A navigation system is optional.

Under the Hood
Ford’s Duratec 3.0-liter V-6 produces 203 horsepower and 207 pounds-feet of torque and drives a continuously variable transmission. The Freestyle can be equipped with front- or all-wheel drive. Operating without any gears, the CVT unit uses two variable-size pulleys, connected by a chain, to transfer engine power to the drive wheels.

Safety
Front seat airbags are standard, and seat-mounted side-impact airbags, along with a Safety Canopy side curtain airbag system, will be standard on all models later in the 2007 model year. All-disc antilock brakes are standard, and traction control is standard on vehicles equipped with all-wheel drive.

Driving Impressions
Ford’s V-6 and CVT work beautifully to deliver eager acceleration with utter smoothness. Overall performance might trail vehicles with a conventional automatic transmission, but the Freestyle passes and merges with quick responses.

Ride comfort is generally good, though it’s closer to that of an SUV than a traditional wagon. Handling is ordinary but satisfactory.

The wide console creates a slightly tight feeling in an otherwise ample front seat. Second-row space — even in the center position — is snug but satisfying. Reaching the third row is more of a battle.

Visibility is good despite thick rear pillars, and the controls are conveniently positioned. Facing a very low cowl, the driver gets the sensation of sitting high off the ground. Cargo space behind the third-row seat is modest, but both rows of seats fold down easily.

  • I owned our 2006 freestyle for over 18 years.

I owned our 2006 freestyle for over 18 years. It has 237,000 miles on it and we only have had to do the AC, and thus far 1 wheel baring. This car is better then anything I have ever driven. However, after all these years...a thorough paint job is required and I am gonna get it done! Runs like a charm, no noise in the engine and purrs like a kitten. I love my freestyle! She's getting up in the years but still passes an inspection with flying colors.

  • Good solid bus

I owned a freestyle from 2010 until 2013 it was a comfortable easy to drive car it had CVT 4wd transmission. It had 38,000 mile on the clock when I bought it and 82,000 when I traded it in. I nad a couple of problems I had taken it into a a Ford dealer for a full Service at 42.000 miles Later I had a transmission warning light, come on. According to the Service Manual the CVT oil transmission filter should have been changed at 40,000 miles "For some reason this was not done" I checked with another dealers and was quoted $700 I went to a transmission shop and they said the filter costs $80 but it's and w=awkward job. I found out on line the filter is located behind the front drivers side Engine mount. I spoke to my local Garage the mechanic said OK bring it in. I took the new filter it come complete with a set of seals. They put the car up on the ramp put a jack under the engine removed the crivers side front wheel the took out the engine mount. Removed the filter cover replaced the filter and the seals replaced the engine mount and the drivers side wheel. Roved the jack lowered the car and checked the transmission oil level. It needed some oil so they added 1 liter of transmission oil. Total charged two hours labour and the oil. Just over $100 I learned one thing Never take a car to a main dealer once its out of its Guarantee time. Apart from routine oil changed and brakes and tires not other maintenance was required. I understand later models had a six speed auto transmission.

  • Pretty nice car for Lyft.

I bought this car in late Jan. 2020 with sole purpose of having a larger car for more passengers and luggage. Great great reviews on the ride and interior. I can only drive it now on the wknds due to lousy gas mileage. I only get 16 in the city/highway combined. Even so I love the car.

  • Best, most reliable car we have owned.

One of Ford's best cars. Far superior to Edge in its day. Comfortable, good ride, and good handling. We would buy another if still available.

  • Overall a very good experience

So far so good, we'll use it as a stuff hauler, people hauler and commuter. I looked at several similar vehicles, some older some newer, but the Freestyle had more space for stuff, 3 rows of seats, better towing ratings, easy ingress and egress, less blind spots plus it's more of a wagon than a blocky SUV and a bulking Van. (Leather is really nice). Would have liked to had the 3,8L V6 and AWD option but I took the best available.

  • 250000 Miles now; still going great

This is the best car; exterior still is great, I keep it dirty when I want it to look old. Plain on the outside, luxury on the inside. Best car ever!! I always use Ford for servicing. I don't recommend, because when this one wears out; I don't want you to buy my next one, with low miles!

  • A great all around SUV.

I think of this vehicle as more like a large station wagon than an SUV. It has plenty of room, seats are very comfortable, lots of power, fair gas mileage, and comfortable to handle. The ride is great, the vehicle is quiet, and so far nothing has gone wrong with it. But I've only owned it for a month, and the vehicle I selected had only 36,000 on it. The turning radius could be a little tighter but that's the only criticism that I can think of. Push-button entry is one of my favorite features... you never have to worry about accidently locking yourself out. I would highly recommend this vehicle as an all-around personal vehicle or family vehicle.
