Vehicle Overview

Ford used the previous Fusion to usher in its new three-bar grille, which has been a hit with buyers. The current Fusion has an even bolder chrome grille, as if announcing to the world, "Yes, bigger is better." In ascending order, trim levels are the S, SE, SEL and Sport. The Fusion has room for up to five people, and all-wheel drive is optional. There's also a Fusion Hybrid that's detailed separately in the Cars.com Research section.

New for 2012

The SE trim level now comes standard with a six-speed automatic transmission and 17-inch aluminum wheels. Little else of significance has changed.

Exterior

If a large grille and wraparound headlights dominate the Fusion's face, the rear seems more subtle. It ditches the original Fusion's trendy clear-lens taillights for traditional red markers. Exterior features include:

  • Standard 16-inch alloy wheels
  • Standard body-colored door handles and front and rear bumpers
  • Optional 17-inch wheels
  • Sport models add 18-inch wheels, chrome exhaust pipes and a rear spoiler

Interior

The Fusion seats five, and there is a standard 60/40-split rear seat for carrying longer items. There are metallic accents on the center console, doors and steering wheel. Interior features include:

  • Standard power locks and windows
  • Standard air conditioning
  • Optional heated front seats
  • Optional dual-zone automatic air conditioning
  • Optional leather upholstery
  • Optional navigation system with 8-inch screen

Under the Hood

The Fusion's base engine is a 175-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder. It drives either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Two V-6s are also offered. Mechanical features include:

  • Optional 240-hp, 3.0-liter V-6 is available for SE and SEL trims
  • Fusion Sport gets a 263-hp, 3.5-liter V-6
  • V-6 engines drive a six-speed automatic
  • Front- or all-wheel drive
  • All engines use regular gas

Safety

Safety features include:

  • Six standard airbags including side-impact airbags for the front seats and side curtain airbags for both rows
  • Standard four-wheel-disc antilock brakes, traction control and an electronic stability system
  • Optional blind spot warning system with Cross Traffic Alert, which can warn of crossing traffic when backing out of a parking spot
