Family Car of the Year
2009 Ford Flex
For years, the family car has been an unappealing "must" rather than a "want." The Ford Flex crossover delivers a desirable driving experience and a look that surprised our editors. It's easy to fall for the Flex's direct steering, comfortable ride and spacious seating for eight. The design is slightly harder for everyone to fall in love with, but judging by the stares and comments of passers-by, the Flex definitely has an appealing look.
Unlike most minivans, the Flex offers an all-wheel-drive option and returns mileage that's on par with the best entry in the minivan segment: last year's Family winner, the Honda Odyssey. During our staff's testing, the Flex drew considerable praise from our editors, but its highest honors came during a summer vacation road trip. On the trip, editor in chief Patrick Olsen witnessed the high mileage the Flex returned in real-world driving (EPA estimates of 16 mpg/22 mpg city/highway with all-wheel drive), along with rave reviews from his family/passengers. That only served as confirmation that the Flex is the winner.
