2005 Ford Freestyle
Ford is planning an exceptionally busy year with the launch of three brand-new models, a new hybrid-powered compact sport utility vehicle and a redesigned Mustang. In addition, a reworked compact Focus went on sale in the spring of 2004 as a 2005 model. This year, the Focus gets a PZEV (Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle) rating, and the car's lineup now includes a performance-oriented ZX4 ST model with a 151-horsepower four-cylinder engine. Read more

Freestyle

Ford calls its new 2005 Freestyle a midsize "crossover." Replacing the front-wheel-drive Taurus wagon, the six- or seven-passenger Freestyle promises more SUV-like qualities. GT

Simply put, the Ford GT is an all-American supercar that was created in homage to the GT40 racecars that dominated competition at Le Mans in the mid-1960s. A supercharged, midmounted V-8 produces 550 horsepower, which is roughly equivalent to the output from the original, larger engine that went into competition GT40 cars.  Get full GT report

Crown Victoria

Other than one new color and a newly available six-CD changer, little has changed on Ford's traditional rear-wheel-drive full-size sedan. A moderate revamping for 2003 included a new frame and major upgrades in ride, steering and handling, comfort and safety. Rack-and-pinion steering replaced the Crown Victoria's old recirculating-ball system, and the sizable sedan's turning circle was reduced by a foot. The Crown Victoria features a 4.6-liter V-8 that may be equipped to run on natural gas. A four-speed-automatic transmission is installed. Escape

E-Series

Ford's full-size E-Series cargo van and passenger Wagon are equipped with rear-wheel drive and a four-speed-automatic transmission; a five-speed automatic is available with diesel-powered models. Engine choices range from a 4.6-liter V-8 to a 6.8-liter V-10. For 2004, a new 6.0-liter Power Stroke V-8 diesel that produces 440 pounds-feet of torque replaced the previous 7.3-liter diesel engine. In addition, the base engine became a 4.6-liter V-8 rather than a 4.2-liter V-6. Wagons with 11- and 14-passenger capacities have a center aisle. Excursion

Ford had announced that its largest sport utility vehicle might be dropped during the 2004 model year, but it's surviving into 2005 with minor changes, including a new nostril-style grille. For 2004, an XLS trim replaced the XLT Value model; other trims include the XLT, Eddie Bauer and Limited. Expedition

Ford's full-size sport utility vehicle gained some innovative new features as part of its 2003 redesign, including the availability of the world's first power-folding third-row seat. Explorer

Ford redesigned its midsize Explorer sport utility vehicle for the 2002 model year and added an optional DVD entertainment system. Second-row bucket seats went into 2004 Eddie Bauer and Limited models with third-row seating. Either a 210-horsepower V-6 or a 239-hp, 4.6-liter V-8 may be installed. Exterior and interior upgrades mark the 2005 models, and a new XLT appearance package is available. Ford's AdvanceTrac system with Roll Stability Control is now standard on all models. Explorer Sport Trac

Ford's Explorer-based SUV/pickup truck "crossover" will continue into the 2005 model year. Featuring an open 4-foot cargo box at the rear, the Explorer Sport Trac comes with a 4.0-liter V-6 that mates with a five-speed-automatic transmission. Four trim levels are available. F-150

Ford's best-selling full-size pickup truck got a new look, a wider track, four-wheel disc brakes and new rack-and-pinion steering for the 2004 model year. A new 4.2-liter V-6 has been added for 2005. Alternate choices include a 4.6-liter V-8 or a 300-horsepower, 5.4-liter V-8. A four-speed automatic is the sole transmission. Six trim levels are available for 2005: the workhorse XL; youth-oriented STX; midrange XLT, FX4 and Lariat; and a new King Ranch edition with Castaño leather interior trim. F-250 Super Duty

Last year, a new Harley-Davidson model joined the F-250 Super Duty series. In 2004, select SuperCab and Crew Cab models could have an optional power sliding rear window. A new 6.0-liter Power Stroke diesel engine that cranks out 325 horsepower and 560 pounds-feet of torque and mates with a five-speed TorqShift automatic transmission became available early in 2003. F-350 Super Duty

Ford's F-350 Super Duty has a one-ton capacity rating and, like the F-250 Super Duty, it gained a Harley-Davidson edition in 2004. Available engines include a 325-horsepower, 6.0-liter Power Stroke diesel V-8; a new 355-hp, 6.8-liter V-10 gasoline engine; and a 5.4-liter V-8. Transmission choices include a five-speed automatic and a six-speed manual. Exterior styling has been revised and the chassis underwent a major redesign for 2005. Focus

Offered as a sedan, hatchback and wagon, the European-themed Focus is Ford's smallest and least-expensive model. Face-lifted for 2005, the Focus now holds a 136-horsepower engine. A larger, 2.3-liter four-cylinder goes into the new ZX4 ST sedan, which borrows some performance suspension components from the departed SVT Focus.  Get full Focus report 

 

Freestar

Last year, the overall styling didn't change much as Ford switched from the old Windstar to the new Freestar minivan, but a complete interior restyling and underhood upgrades took place. Mercury introduced a related Monterey minivan. Ford promised improvements in safety, steering, ride and performance. The third-row seat may be positioned to face the rear for tailgate parties, and it can fold flat into the floor. An optional Safety Canopy curtain-type airbag system protects all occupants in the event of a rollover. Ford's 4.2-liter V-6 produces 201 horsepower, versus 193 hp in the 3.9-liter V-6. Ranger

Last year, all Rangers got appearance revisions that included a raised power dome hood. The new nostril grille had horizontal bars on 4x2 models and a honeycomb pattern on 4x4s. A rally gauge cluster was new, and a Pioneer Sound Package included an in-dash six-CD MP3 player. Later in the model year, leather seating surfaces became optional and the Tremor audio system got a boost to 510 watts with MP3 capability. The Ranger is available with a four-cylinder engine or a choice of two V-6s and with either a manual gearbox or a five-speed-automatic transmission. Two configurations have been added for 2005, and the Ranger Edge may be equipped with a special audio and wheel package. Get full Ranger report 

 

Taurus

Ford's midsize front-wheel-drive sedan and wagon got a new eggcrate grille, front fascia and fresh taillamps for 2004. The engines and transmissions were modified, and the instrument cluster and steering wheel were updated. For the 2005 model year, the Taurus gets minor exterior, interior and safety changes. Thunderbird

Though it is fully modern underneath, the T-Bird is a throwback to the original two-passenger car of 1955 - 1957. In addition to its eggcrate grille and round headlights, styling touches are reminiscent of those fabled models. For 2004, a universal garage-door opener was installed, the wheels were revised, and the seats were restyled. A chrome chevron with an integrated V-8 badge is mounted on the front fenders. The Thunderbird uses a 280-horsepower, 3.9-liter V-8 and a five-speed-automatic transmission.
