Introduced as a 2004.5 model, the latest version of Volvo's compact S40 sedan is a little shorter, wider and taller than before. A 168-horsepower, 2.4-liter five-cylinder powers the regular front-wheel-drive S40, while the high-performance T5 edition gets a 218-hp turbocharged engine. An optional Haldex all-wheel-drive system, a close-ratio six-speed-manual transmission and a less-expensive model with a five-speed-manual gearbox will be added in July 2004. A five-speed Geartronic automatic transmission is optional for all S40 models. Aluminum replaces wood effect as the standard inlay in T5 models, and a Dynamic Trim Package will be available.

The S60 is available with a wide selection of engines: a 168-horsepower, 2.4-liter five-cylinder; a 208-hp, 2.5-liter light-pressure turbocharged five-cylinder; and a turbocharged 2.4-liter that gets a boost to 257 hp in the T5 edition for 2005. A high-performance version called the S60 R captured the attention of many buyers. Featuring a Four-C adaptive chassis, the S60 R uses a 300-hp, 2.5-liter inline-five-cylinder, Servotronic steering, Brembo brakes and Haldex all-wheel drive. For 2005, T5 models gain a standard sport suspension and can have 17- or 18-inch wheels. Exterior freshening includes a softened front nose with new headlamps, grille and bumper.

First introduced for the 1999 model year, Volvo's front-wheel-drive flagship sedan was reworked for 2004. The front fascia was restyled, the soft-nose grille surround was reworked for a gentler transition to the bodysides, and fog lamps were new. More important to buyers in the Snow Belt, a new all-wheel-drive S80 joined the lineup. Available on S80s with the 208-horsepower, turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder, the all-wheel-drive system works automatically, with no driver input needed. A 268-hp, 2.9-liter inline-six-cylinder is also available for front-drive models. Front fog lamps are standard on all 2005 models, and Volvo's Four-C chassis is optional for front-drive T6 and 2.5T models.

For 2004, the V70's mirrors were redesigned to reduce wind noise, new 15-inch alloy wheels were mounted, and new ZF rack-and-pinion steering was installed. A new V70 Titanium Edition featured Amathea alloy wheels and silver roof rails and moldings. A high-performance V70 R wagon holds a 300-horsepower, 2.5-liter inline-five-cylinder that works with a standard six-speed manual or optional five-speed-automatic transmission. Three other engines are offered in V70 wagons. Among other changes for 2005, new headlamps and taillamps have transparent lenses, and a "waterfall" grille is installed. The rear wheel housings are now fabric-lined for noise suppression, and the T5's engine gets a boost to 257 hp.

Side curtain-type airbags provide protection for all three rows of seats. For 2004, a wood-trimmed steering wheel and a leather gearshift knob were optional. The 2.5T model uses a 208-horsepower turbocharged five-cylinder, while the T6 gets an inline-six-cylinder that cranks out 268 hp.
