Now entering its third year, the Ford Edge is a five-seat midsize crossover. The Edge is available in SE, SEL, Limited and (new for 2009) Sport trim levels. The Edge competes with the Nissan Murano, Mazda CX-7 and Mitsubishi Outlander. New for 2009 The Edge receives two new safety features: a blind spot mirror and SOS-Post Crash Alert System. The standard blind spot mirror adds a convex mirror aimed at the driver's blind spot. The standard SOS-Post Crash Alert System unlocks the vehicle doors and activates the horn/hazard flashers in the event of a crash. There's also a new Sport model that features a newly optional sports-tuned suspension. Exterior The Edge looks like a bulky wagon. It carries Ford's three-bladed chrome grille and has clear-lens taillamps. The Edge is 185.7 inches long and 75.8 across, making it slightly longer than the CX-7 and Outlander and just shorter than the Murano. It is the widest of the group. For 2009, the new Sport model includes an eight-piece body kit (it's the only version with a body-colored front air dam and lower sills), smoked taillights and headlamps, and optional 22-inch rims.
The Edge provides seating for five, and its car-based design means it's easy to get in and out without climbing. The instrument panel features white-faced gauges, and there are available metal accents for the dashboard. For 2009, Ford made the front air vents more maneuverable than before. The 60/40-split rear seats fold forward easily thanks to spring-loaded backrests and, optionally, a power button in the rear of the cargo area that releases them remotely. Buyers can add an optional fold-flat front passenger seat. With the rear seats and front passenger seat folded, the Edge can carry 8-foot-long items like lumber or a rolled-up carpet. Behind the second row is 32.2 cubic feet of cargo space. With the seats folded, that number more than doubles to 69 cubic feet. That's about even with the Murano; space is tighter in the CX-7. For 2009, Ford has added passenger grab handles and a cargo management system for better cargo and passenger flexibility.
The Edge can tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped.
The Edge's crashworthiness is top-notch, having earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Top Safety Pick award for front-, side- and rear-impact protection.
