Vehicle Overview
Toyota’s biggest SUV gets an optional navigation system with a DVD player and a JBL sound system as its main additions for 2001. Bigger things are due for 2002, when the Land Cruiser and the similarLexus LX 470 are due for extensive changes.

The Land Cruiser and LX 470 are built from the same design and share major components, but as Toyota’s luxury division, Lexus gives its version more standard features and more luxurious furnishings.

Exterior
Overall length on the Land Cruiser is 192 inches, about 8 inches shorter than the Chevrolet Tahoe and a foot shorter than the Lincoln Navigator. Access to the cargo area is through a window that flips up and a tailgate that drops down.

Interior
Seats for five are standard, with two front buckets and a split three-place bench that folds for more cargo room. A removable three-place rear seat is optional; the split rear seat also folds outward for more cargo space. Though that increases passenger capacity to eight on paper, only three children are likely to fit in the cramped rear seat. Cargo volume is 91 cubic feet.

Standard features include leather upholstery, a six-CD changer, automatic climate control, a power sunroof and remote keyless entry.

Under the Hood
The Land Cruiser has a 230-horsepower 4.7-liter V-8 engine, four-speed automatic transmission and permanently engaged four-wheel drive, all shared with the LX 470. A locking center differential, limited-slip rear differential and traction control also are standard. Standard features include antilock brakes and a skid-control system that applies the brakes to wheels individually as needed.
