Subaru sells two midsize cars, the Legacy sedan and Outback wagon, both with all-wheel drive. The Outback competes with the Volkswagen Passat wagon, Volvo V50 and Toyota Venza; at the high end, it also could take on Volvo's XC70. New for 2009 An electronic stability system is now standard. All trims but the base Outback 2.5i have an upscale Harman Kardon stereo; reshuffled trims now include, in ascending order, the Outback 2.5i, 2.5i Special Edition and Limited. Limited trims have the option of six-cylinder or turbocharged four-cylinder engines. Last year's base, Premium and L.L.Bean editions are gone. Exterior At 189.0 inches long, the Outback sits nearly a foot longer than the V50 but it's roughly even with the Venza, Passat wagon and XC70. Its width, at 69.7 inches, matches the V50 but trails its competitors by several inches.
The five-seat Outback offers 33.5 cubic feet of cargo volume with the rear seats up, a figure that rivals the XC70 and easily beats the V50. Volkswagen's Passat wagon offers slightly larger dimensions (35.8 cubic feet), while Toyota has not yet rated the Venza's interior volume.
The Outback 2.5i and 2.5i Special Edition employ a four-cylinder engine, while the Limited has the option of a four-cylinder, turbocharged four-cylinder or six-cylinder. Manual and automatic transmissions are available.
