Vehicle Overview
Land Rover's LR3 SUV takes the name LR4 for the 2010 model year. The new model retains the general shape and size of its predecessor, but it gains new styling cues that better align it with the rest of the Land Rover family. Additional changes include the installation of a new V-8 engine that makes more power, and an updated interior. The LR4 hits dealerships in fall 2009 and competes with the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz M-Class and Lexus GX 470.

Exterior
The LR4's front-end styling is significantly different from the LR3's. Changes include a new bar-style grille and new headlights. The back of the SUV still features its predecessor's unique asymmetrical liftgate/tailgate, but the taillights now have a clear-lens design. On the whole, however, it still looks similar to the LR3.

There are changes underneath the sheet metal, too, including a revised suspension for better on-road performance, according to Land Rover. Nineteen-inch alloy wheels are standard and 20-inch rims are optional.

Interior
Interior changes include a revised center control panel that features a new button layout, a new steering wheel, new front seats with longer bottom cushions and LED ambient lighting. Five- and seven-seat configurations are offered, and available features include automatic high-beam headlights and a system that uses five cameras to show a complete view of the area around the LR4.

Under the Hood
The four-wheel-drive LR4's new V-8 engine is larger and more powerful. It displaces 5.0 liters, makes 375 horsepower and 375 pounds-feet of torque, and benefits from direct-injection technology. It teams with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The LR4 features Land Rover's Terrain Response system that tailors vehicle characteristics to accommodate driving conditions, whether you're on pavement, slogging through mud or in other conditions. Land Rover says it has improved the system in the LR4, offering a new start-off setting for the sand-driving program and changes to the rock-climbing mode to make for smoother travels.

Safety
Standard safety features include antilock brakes, side-impact airbags for the front seats, side curtain airbags and an electronic stability system.
