The 2006 Greater Los Angeles Auto Show had just about everything, from a subcompact Toyota sedan to a 1,001-horsepower Bugatti supercar. Vehicles introduced included crossovers, full-size sport utility vehicles and economy sedans, but two themes rang dominant: Automakers — both foreign and domestic — wanted to appear more American and environmentally friendly. In the Los Angeles Convention Center — not that far from a concession stand that sells $7.25 tuna sandwiches and $4 smoothies, and from the decidedly unglamorous concrete outdoor smoking patio — is a whole lot of automotive bling. Mark LaNeve, vice president of General Motors North America vehicle sales, service and marketing, said today that the company will focus on promoting ethanol-based E85 fuel capabilities and fuel management systems as part of an overarching plan to promote fuel efficiency. Advertisements hyping this year's Greater Los Angeles Auto Show feature two cars: the $1.2 million, 1,001-horsepower Bugatti Veyron supercar and the Honda Civic Hybrid — a seemingly disparate pair of rides that, collectively, sum up the quintessential and often fantastical L.A. driving experience.
