BMW 325
BMW's 3 Series is a popular choice among buyers entering the luxury market because of its sporty image and reputation for quality. This also makes it a prime target for competitors. Two key rivals are zeroing in on the 3 Series this year: Lexus with its new IS 300 and Mercedes-Benz with a redesigned C-Class line. Next year, Jaguar will introduce its own 3 Series rival.

BMW 740
The flagship sedan of the BMW fleet gets a portable phone that operates in either digital or analog mode as a new standard feature and run-flat tires as a no-cost option. Last year, the run-flat tires were available only on the “light-armored” Protection Line models of the 740iL and 750iL. BMW says the tires can run up to 300 miles at 50 mph without air.

BMW M3
Even though BMW is well known for its automobile performance, a select group of shoppers crave something even more thrilling. For that group, BMW has offered for years the M editions of its 3 Series, 5 Series and most recently, the smaller Z Series models: the Z3 and Z8. BMW’s M division has turned out about 13,000 cars in two design generations.

BMW X5
BMW joined the luxury SUV ranks last year with the X5, a car-based sport utility introduced as a challenger for the Lexus RX 300, Mercedes-Benz M-Class, Infiniti QX4 and other upper-crust models. Though it comes with a permanently engaged four-wheel-drive system, BMW positions the X5 as suited for “any road, any time, any reason” instead of as an offroad vehicle.

BMW Z3
New engines for 2001 are the top news for BMW’s group of two-passenger sports cars, which debuted in 1999. What had been the base Z3 2.3 roadster is now the 2.5i, courtesy of a new 2.5-liter inline-six-cylinder engine that makes 14 horsepower more than its predecessor with a bit less torque. In the same vein, the Z3 2.8 roadster and hatchback become 3.0i models, now fitted with a 3.0-liter inline-six that develops 32 hp more than before.

BMW Z8
On sale since the summer of 2000, BMW’s newest and most costly model first appeared in the James Bond movie, “The World Is Not Enough,” driven by Pierce Brosnan as he portrayed the brilliant British intelligence agent. Largely hand-built in Munich, Germany, the Z8 is a luxury/performance companion to the more affordable Z3 and is the only BMW to sell for a six-figure price.
