Expert 2012 Honda CR-Z review

our expert's take
Our expert's take
By Cars.com editors

our expert's take

Vehicle Overview

The  CR-Z debuted last year and is Honda’s third hybrid, joining the compact Civic Hybrid and Insight, which both seat five. Despite having just two seats, the small CR-Z has the lowest gas mileage of the three. The CR-Z is intended to be sportier, both in appearance and driving experience. It competes with small, efficient cars like the Mini Cooper.

New for 2012
CR-Zs painted Crystal Black Pearl can have optional black fabric seats. There are no other changes for 2012.

Exterior
The CR-Z has a broad stance and wedgelike profile. Inspired by the CRX two-seater sold in 1990 and ’91, the CR-Z  shares that model’s split liftgate window, an element that remains controversial in terms of style and driver visibility in the Insight and Toyota Prius.

At 160 inches long, the CR-Z is a few inches longer than a Mazda MX-5 Miata and the extended version of the Mini Cooper, the Clubman. Exterior features include:

  • Standard 16-inch alloy wheels; 17-inch alloys available
  • Standard LED taillights
  • Standard rear-window wiper
  • Available high-intensity-discharge headlamps
  • Available fog lights
  • Available heated side mirrors

Interior
The interior has a busy but effective design similar to that of the Insight, with cockpit-style driver-oriented controls and displays. Even the ventilation controls are on a pod near the driver; there’s no conventional center control panel and the optional navigation system is slightly on the passenger side of the dashboard.

Storage bins behind the seats are separated from the cargo area by a bulkhead that can be folded forward to extend the cargo hatch’s floor — similar to a folding seat’s backrest. A retractable cargo cover is standard. Interior features include:

  • Power windows, locks and mirrors
  • Manual-adjustable bucket seats
  • Tilt/telescoping steering wheel
  • CD stereo with MP3 jack and USB port
  • Available premium stereo with subwoofer
  • Available Bluetooth connectivity
  • Available leather-wrapped steering wheel

Under the Hood
Like other Honda hybrids, the CR-Z uses a relatively simple system that puts an electric motor in tandem with a gas engine, in this case a 1.5-liter four-cylinder. Though the engine shuts off when the car is stopped, it’s always turning over when the car’s in motion.

To suit the driver’s needs, the CR-Z has Sport, Normal and Econ modes. Econ maximizes fuel economy, while Sport makes the acceleration more responsive and decreases the power-steering assist for a sportier feel. Mechanical features include:

  • Gas engine and motor combine to produce 122 horsepower
  • Standard six-speed manual transmission
  • Optional continuously variable automatic transmission

Safety
Standard safety features include:

  • Side-impact airbags
  • Side curtain airbags
  • Four-wheel-disc antilock brakes
  • Electronic stability system with traction control
  • Active head restraints

  • Great drive great feel great fun

Got this car in 2017 with 80k miles. In the spring summer and fall the car got about 35-39 mpg. In the winter it went to a low of 32 mpg. Saved tons on gas only filling up the roughly 8 gal tank once a month. The ride is fun just straight fun! The handling feels fantastic in total control at all times! It both rides like and feels like a go kart right turns and fast acceleration. Don’t be fooled by the small engine the car can easily reach 60 mph and above and maintain it. Would highly revoke this car for anyone looking for something 10k or under that is looking for a car that while being not too expensive looks unique and high end. Plenty of trunk space almost a deceiving amount with adjustable “back seat”. There is a “back seat” but without seatbelts it is not legal to have passengers l. With surround sound the speakers have quality sound that goes all around the car and sound nice. Personally put the car through tough circumstances driving it through dirt rounds in the winter up a mountain and it handled beautifully despite not being made for that at all. Performs best on back roads where speed limit is 30-50 mph. Objectively I would say that the only downsides are there are only two seats but being small can have pros too and the cold weather and the car being particularly electric the battery depletes semi often. Also on some models or maybe all (idk I only had one model) the lights are not automatic and and there will be a beep sometimes if you leave them on when the keys are out but there have been times when it did not and I left the lights on. But all in all the car is quick, fast, stable, and more reliable and sturdy then it seems. Again the handling feels amazing and works wonders in corners. HIGHLY RECOMMEND bang for your buck.

  • Sporty, Reliable Car

This car is fast, stylish, and compact which has a lot of trunk space. Very reliable never had any mechanical issues, runs smoothly. The a/c blows strong and cold. I get a lot of compliments because of the sleek look and aesthetics of the car.

  • maneuveral, economical, handles well below 70 MPH

I love this car. Easy to drive, economical and quick handling for a car of its pedigree. Fit and finish are excellent. Seats fit well but not the most comfortable on long drives.

  • I love Hondas, and this model especially!

I use this car for shorter trips (work/groceries/appointments), mainly in the summertime. I rarely drive any car with more than two people in it. So this Honda model made perfect sense for me. The cruise control is perfectly tuned - does not drop on uphill climbs. So highway driving is a pleasure. The lack of a backup camera is okay with me - but I would trade it in on a new one if they still manufactured this model!

  • Great Sport Hybrid

Perfect first car, Average MPG 38/42 city/hwy; If you want something different you should consider it. The Honda CR-Z is a two-seater sporty hybrid; Even though it?s a small hatchback, the CR-Z has about 25 cubic feet of cargo space; manufactured in Japan.

  • The Honda CR-V was the best and most reliable car

The gas mileage on this hybrid was excellent and it was very fun to drive! The exterior styling was also very cool. Having only two seats was inconvenient at times.

  • Slow Cars are Fun to Drive Fast!

The most common complaint is that this car is slow, which is true. This car shares a small 1.5L engine with the previous Honda fit, with a little extra power added from the hybrid system. However, it is an amazing handling car. Because of these traits the car is a blast to drive hard on backroads, and you can enjoy this fun little car without breaking traffic laws like cars with more power. In my 25k miles owning this car, I have averaged a little over 41 mpg. Few cars can claim to be this fun AND this economical! The 3 stars for comfort was given due to the harsh ride over rougher roads. This car has a fairly stiff suspension to improve handling and cornering abilities for "spirited" driving. As a result, it does not have the smoothest ride. In my opinion, the rough ride is worth the good handling!

  • I've owned Honda's for over 30 years

I bought my 2012 CRZ in Jan. 2013, so over 4 years and I've only had trouble with the AC which was easily fixed at the dealership. Also had trouble with the tire pressure warning coming on all the time, but I invested in a full set of high performance tires and doesn't happen so much anymore. I definitely recommend this for a single person since it only takes one passenger. But I love the mileage and I do a lot of commuting so over 40+ mpg regularly.

  • Perfect commuting car

This vehicle has served me very well in daily commutes and my wallet. Filling up once a week for $20.00 and no major maintenance outside of the scheduled intervals speaks to its value and dipendability. I could easily see this being justified as a daily driver for someone looking to go easier on their other vehicle, or something for a first time driver wanting to learn on a manual. I have no doubts this car will hold up for any purpose.

  • Love This Car

I love my 2012 Honda CRZ EX. I test drove other hybrids and this one was by far the most fun to drive and the best looking. I drove a VW Jetta with a turbo that had 180 hp before switching to this car and I don't feel like it has much less power honestly, even though I think it has 120-ish hp instead. Its powerful enough that I forget I am driving a hybrid and also don't feel like I'm sacrificing fun and zip for economy. The three driving modes are fun and "sport" mode is very fulfilling. You can pull up screens that show you when you are driving and breaking economically, which has taught me quite a bit about how to drive efficiently. Its fun to see how many mpg's I can get when driving in "econ" mode as economically as possible and I've gotten the car computer to rate me at over 50 mpg at times (assuming the car's computer is accurate). I also love how the engine shuts off when you are at a stop...so efficient! I don't think the blind spots are as bad as reviewers claim they are and adjusting your mirrors properly and installing blind spot mirrors on the side mirrors helps, too. I love the styling on the exterior and interior. The speedometer is really cool looking with a 3D type of effect, and the ring around it changes color based on the mode you are in and how economically you are driving. Because they didn't try to squeeze rear passenger seats in, there is ample leg room even for a person over 6ft tall, even though the car is quite small. If you want a sports car, buy an actual sports car instead. If you want the best miles per gallon, get a Prius. If you want a fun hybrid that still gets pretty good mileage and is a blast to drive, then this is the car for you. Don't listen to the "expert" reviews. This car is great!
