Hummer introduced its smallest model, the H3, with a five-cylinder engine in 2006, and the timing couldn't have been better. Gas prices were rising and among the most volatile on record. Still, everyone knew the truck needed more power. Even though the 2007 model received a small boost from 220 to 242 horsepower, the first real power infusion comes in the 2008 H3 Alpha, a special edition propelled by a 300-hp, 5.3-liter V-8. Based on price alone, the H3 competes in the market with the Land Rover LR2, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Lincoln MKX.
