Vehicle Overview

Hyundai's full-size Azera, a competitor to the Toyota Avalon and Ford Taurus, enters its second generation for 2012. The front-drive sedan slots between the Sonata family sedan and Genesis luxury car. It adopts Hyundai's fluidic styling and a new direct-injection V-6, and it will come with a litany of standard luxury features.

Exterior

The Azera looks like a larger Sonata, complete with similar chrome strips running from the headlights to the base of the A-pillars. The distinction comes in back, where a red strip joins the Azera's taillights but raises them off the trunk for a floating effect.

Nineteen-inch alloy wheels are optional. At 193.3 inches from bumper to bumper, the new Azera is just as long as its predecessor, but it's slightly wider.

Interior

The five-seat interior features similar shapes to Hyundai's latest cabins: a broad dashboard whose center controls splay into its upper reaches. Standard features include heated front and rear seats, leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control and a navigation system with a backup camera. On the audio front, the Azera gets a standard iPod/USB-compatible stereo with Bluetooth phone control and audio streaming.

Hyundai claims exceptional front legroom and headroom. Trunk volume measures a competitive 16.3 cubic feet. Ventilated front seats are optional, as is a subwoofer-equipped Infinity stereo.

Under the Hood

The Azera's 3.3-liter V-6 gets direct-injection technology to make 293 horsepower, up 33 hp from last year's port-injected 3.3-liter V-6. The outgoing Azera's 3.8-liter V-6, meanwhile, has been dropped. Gas mileage is rated at 20/28 mpg city/highway. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard.

Safety

Nine airbags, antilock brakes and an electronic stability system are standard.
