Vehicle Overview

The Hyundai Tucson is a compact SUV that competes with the Nissan Rogue, Ford Escape and Subaru Forester. It's been redesigned for 2010 and uses a different platform than the outgoing model; it is also slightly longer. It comes standard with a manual transmission, which is unusual in this class.

Exterior

The Tucson has a longer wheelbase and is a few inches longer than the outgoing model. In terms of size and proportions, it's similar to the Rogue, and it's roughly the same size as the Escape and Forester, too. The Tucson comes standard with 17-inch steel wheels, but 17- and 18-inch alloy wheels are available. A rear spoiler is standard and a panoramic moonroof is optional.

Interior

Tucsons come standard with power windows, folding side mirrors and remote keyless entry. There are also 12-volt power outlets in the front of the cabin and the cargo area, an armrest storage bin, map pockets and a flip-down rear armrest with cupholders.

Bluetooth connectivity and steering-wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls are options. Base GLS trim levels have cloth seats while the top-of-the-line Limited gets leather upholstery and heated front seats.

Under the Hood

The Tucson is powered by a 176-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that teams with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Front- and all-wheel-drive models are offered.

Hyundai claims gas mileage for the front-drive model with the automatic transmission is an impressive 23/31 mpg city/highway; with the manual transmission it drops slightly to 22/30 mpg, and the all-wheel-drive automatic model gets 21/28 mpg.

Safety

There's a standard electronic stability system with traction control, six airbags including side curtain airbags with rollover sensors, active front head restraints and antilock brakes.
