"I bought my 2000 S Type in 2005 with less than 50k miles on it. It's now 2010 and I have 98K miles on it. The list of issues I've had with this car is long. If you haven't had these issues on yours, you will one day soon: Heater failure, cooland reservoir failure, oil leaks, cooland leaks, wiring issues, other electronic issues, air compressor failure, catalist replacement, multiple sensor failures, ... These are just the big issues. S Types (and Jags in general) are famous for their lack of quality, and this S Type is living proof. I will never again own anything made by Jaguar."

"I purchased the car in 2005 used. I have had no problems with it; the performance is great. Because it is a 2000 model, I want to sell it in order to get the tech upgrades, i.e., satilite radio, GPS, seats warmer, etc."

"This car is unreliable. End of story. Awful in snow. Expensive to repair. Shifter has issues. Transmission and timming belt are also known issues. My advice is go for the x-type instead. Much better vehicle over all."

"I bought this beautiful car 11/06 with 65K on it. Within months I had no heat and needed to order part from England ($550) Loved driving it. Very smooth and fast. Something was not quite right with gears shifting and you couldn't put it in Drive from Park had to put in another gear then shift over to Drive to go. Then the tensioner nightmare happened and the car died on a busy street. Plastic tensioners brose and the time chain become derailed and destroyed intake manifold. (Over $3000.00) and then the power steering pump was going out and air conditioning wouldn't work - we said enough. Sold it with 90K. Never ever again."

Best car I've had

"I bought my 2000 S-type 4.0 in May of 2002 as a retirement gift to myself. It had only 9,000 miles on the clock with two years of factory warranty and now has 58,000 miles. Only problem I've had is a cracked coolant reservoir which I replaced for $100 and the valve cover gaskets are leaking oil, which will cost about $800 to repair. I hear horror stories about Jaguar reliability, so I guess I've been lucky. Nobody can believe the car is eight years old, and in my opinion the styling is ageless. There is nothing else on the road that looks like it, it still turns heads wherever I go, and when you get down to it, that's a big part of the appeal. I've owned Accura, Lincoln, and Toyota, and none of them feel quite like this car. It's like every time I drive, it's the first time all over again. It's a certain feel that isn't for everybody; it's a Jaguar. This cat is made for the freeway. Depreciation has been heavy; however, that's not important if you plan on keeping it forever. I do wish the gas milage were a little better, getting about 24 mpg on the highway and 17 overall. More interior storage space would be nice, too. The six-disc CD changer uses up all the glove box."

Unbelievably Unreliable

"We bought our 2000 S-Type when they hit the market, and have nothing but trouble since. It currently (as of July 2007) has only 58,000 miles on it. Despite the low mileage and our diligence in maintaining it, we have had to replace the following due to premature failure: - Thermostat on three separate occasions (over $800 each) - Bushings and front axle (over $2,000) - Water pump - BOTH catalytic converters ($3,000) - Timing tensioners and guides (an $8,500 repair that would have been avoided had Jaguar not used plastic tensioners in the early S-Type models; these tensioners are prone to failure, and if the problem is not corrected as soon as the tensioners begin to break, the time chain can become derailed and destroy the engine - Too many replacements of sensors, fuses, and wiring to list here Our current problem with the car is that its transmission locks up when it is parked uphill. When this happens, the only way to get the car out of park is to push it forward with another car until the transmission unlocks. This is apparently a common defect of Jaguars made from 2000 to 2002. When the transmission finally fails, it will cost us over $8,000 for a new, rebuilt one. I am glad to see that a few other reviewers have owned reliable S-Types. We plan to very soon trade ours in and buy a Lexus."

"We've owned S-Types for 10 years now. We bought our first one the year the model was introduced. there were some new-model woes, but we were fortunate to have a dealer whose service department was proactive in helping resole the issues (some minor electrical problems and a torque lock problem for which there was a very simple work-around). Once the kinks worked out, we were left with a very reliable car. so reliable that when we sold it, we bought another S-Type."
