Vehicle Overview

Built on a car-based platform shared with the Dodge Caliber, the Compass is one of two front-drive-based models from Jeep — the other being the compact Patriot. Compass competitors include the Honda CR-V and Nissan Rogue.

New for 2011
The 2011 Compass gets new front-end styling that makes it look like a smaller version of the Grand Cherokee SUV, Jeep's flagship model. Styling changes to the rear are more subtle. The Compass also gets interior revisions and a new Trail Rated model for 2011.

Exterior
With its new front end, the 2011 Compass looks sleeker than its predecessor. It gets a new seven-slot grille, new headlights and a restyled front bumper. Look closely, and you'll notice the taillights and rear bumper are new, too. Other exterior features include:

  • Standard 17-inch aluminum wheels; 18-inch rims optional
  • Standard fog lights
  • LED taillights
  • Available chrome exhaust tip
  • Available power sunroof

Interior
The Compass' cabin gains a host of updates for 2011, including new trim on the front doors with padded upper sills, a new steering wheel, new cloth upholstery and backlit switches. The interior also features a 60/40-split folding rear seat. Other interior features include:

  • Standard air conditioning
  • Standard cruise control
  • Standard heated side mirrors
  • Available navigation system with Sirius Travel Link
  • Available premium audio with Boston Acoustics speakers

Under the Hood
Two four-cylinder engines are offered in the Compass, and buyers can choose from three drivelines: front-wheel drive; Freedom Drive I four-wheel drive with lock mode; and Freedom Drive II Off-Road Package, a Trail-Rated four-wheel-drive system. Freedom Drive II has a continuously variable automatic transmission that incorporates a low range for off-road driving. The package also includes 17-inch all-terrain tires, a full-size spare tire, a one-inch-higher ride height, skid plates and tow hooks. Mechanical features include:

  • Base 158-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder
  • Available 172-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder
  • Both engines use regular gas
  • Five-speed manual or continuously variable automatic transmission
  • 2,000-pound maximum towing capacity when properly equipped

Safety
Safety features include:

  • Standard hill start assist with manual transmission
  • Standard side curtain airbags
  • Standard electronic stability system with electronic roll mitigation
  • Standard antilock brakes
  • Standard traction control
  • Optional seat-mounted side-impact airbags for the front seats
