Vehicle Overview

Restyled for 2013, the Mazda CX-9 crossover seats up to seven in three rows and is available with front- or all-wheel drive. It competes with the Chevrolet Traverse, Ford Explorer and Toyota Highlander.

New for 2013

New front and rear styling that follows Mazda's latest design direction update the appearance of the CX-9. Inside, new features include a standard 5.8-inch touch-screen that can display incoming text messages when a compatible smartphone is connected, as well as send predetermined replies. Rear parking sensors are newly optional.

Exterior

The CX-9 has sleeker lines and a sportier look than most crossovers, especially large three-row ones. Exterior features include:

  • Standard 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels; available 20-inch wheels
  • Standard dual exhaust tips
  • Available power liftgate
  • Available xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights
  • Available LED daytime running lamps
  • Available fog lights
  • Available power moonroof

Interior

The second row's backrest can recline or fold flat, and the seat can slide fore and aft to optimize legroom and cargo space. There's room for two in the 50/50-split third-row seat, which also folds flat. Interior features include:

  • Standard three-zone automatic climate control
  • Standard 5.8-inch touch-screen, USB port, MP3 jack, and Bluetooth connectivity including audio streaming
  • Cloth seats standard; leather optional
  • Optional power front seats
  • Optional heated front seats
  • Optional rear-seat entertainment system with 9-inch screen
  • Optional Bose premium stereo
  • Optional TomTom-based in-dash navigation system

Under the Hood

The CX-9 features a 273-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6 with 270 pounds-feet of torque. Front- and all-wheel-drive models are offered. An optional Towing Prep Package for front-wheel-drive models — the features are standard for all-wheel-drive CX-9s — includes a revised engine control module and a heavy-duty transmission oil cooler and radiator fan. It increases towing capacity from 2,000 to 3,500 pounds. Mechanical features include:

  • Six-speed automatic transmission with clutchless-manual mode
  • V-6 runs on regular gas

Safety

Safety features include:

  • Standard all-disc antilock brakes
  • Standard side-impact airbags for the front seats
  • Standard three-row side curtain airbags
  • Standard electronic stability system with Roll Stability Control
  • Optional backup camera
  • Optional rear parking sensors
  • Optional blind spot warning system
