Cars.com National May 2, 2000Vehicle Overview
The compact-size CLK is based on the design for the C-Class sedan, but it comes as both a coupe with sportier styling and a convertible. For 2000, a 4.3-liter V-8 is available on the convertible in place of the standard 3.2-liter V-6. The V-8 already was available on the coupe.
All models now come with free maintenance for the four-year/50,000-mile warranty period and gain several new standard features for 2000.
Exterior
The CLK has more rounded lines than the C-Class sedan and a lower nose with round headlamps instead of rectangular lights. CLK models get a lower-body face-lift that includes new front and rear aprons and rocker panels and seven-spoke alloy wheels.
The power-operated top on the CLK convertible includes a glass rear window with a defogger.
Interior
New standard features include a telescoping steering column and TeleAid, a cellular- and satellite-based system that summons help in emergencies and provides a direct link to Mercedes roadside assistance program.
Among new options is the COMAND (Cockpit Management and Data) system that controls a satellite-based navigation system, the sound system and optional telephone via voice commands, and buttons on the steering wheel or controls around a dashboard display screen.
Under the Hood
The CLK320 models use the same 215-horsepower V-6 as the larger E320 and other Mercedes models. The CLK430 comes with a 275-hp 4.3-liter V-8 also used in larger Mercedes models. Both team with a five-speed automatic transmission that now has Touch Shift, which allows changing gears manually by tipping the shift lever left or right. All models have rear-wheel drive.
Electronic Stability Program, an anti-skid system, is standard on all 2000 CLK models. It was optional on the 1999 CLK320.
