W 126 overview

by radiobill from Ft.Myers, Florida | April 28, 2011

Having owned many of these W 126 Mercedes-Benz automobiles, for the money, there is no better car. Designer Bruno Sacco broke away from the MB 'BOX' style with this design in 1981, and it still looks great today. The diesels are built with cast iron blocks, and heads, and are certified at the MB factory to have gone over 1 million miles; many at 750k, and thousands at 500k miles. Do the maintenance, and they will serve you well, in safety, with style, and economy. Any 1981-1991, in it's many variations, will do just finel. I just bought a 1984, one family owned, 300SD turbodiesel with nearly 350,000 highway miles, and could not be happier with it. Watch out for the 'rodbender' 350's; know what you are buying. If overheated, they can cause problems. That seems to be the only model. The rest are seemingly 'bulletproof'.

this car won't stop running, in a good way

by mercedes driver from SoCal | April 15, 2011

I have a 1990 se300. I can drive over 400 freeway miles on one tank of gas, but around town it is not so good - low torque at lower speed. Unbelieveably comfortable - nothing else compares. The leather is still good, and so is the original paint. Nice HUGE trunk and back seat. Always reliable.

Fuel Efficiency, Style and Class

by Cyrano from Upstate New York | September 3, 2010

It doesn't get any better than the Mercedes 350SDL. The downside is that they are semi-rare; less than 6,000 of them were ever imported to the United States. That said, there is parts compatibility with all the other W126 chassis Mercedes, so you can get spares or replacement parts when you need them. The official EPA rating on the 350SDL is 21 MPG city, 23 MPG highway. Don't you believe it! The worst I've ever gotten is 32 MPG in stop & go driving, and on the highway it's more like 38 to 40. Please bear in mind this is for a pre-Chrysler merger panzer that has a GVW of 4800 pounds. In case you're wondering, that's better than the econoboxes being pushed by the Big Three at the moment. You simple can't beat a Mercedes diesel for fuel economy and long range. Yes, if you can find one, you can expect to have to do some maintenance work on it that will cost big bucks. That said, if you spend the money to bring her back to the original specs, she'll pay you back in spades with years of trouble-free, reliable operation. As I said, when it comes to class and utter reliability it doesn't get better than the Mercedes Benz 350SDL. If you want an efficent automobile that will last forever (mine is at 326,000 miles and counting), this is the car for you.

Bullet Proof and Bullet-like Performance

by jack from Denver | October 25, 2007

This car sold for $75K when new and it continues to be one of the best purcheses I ever made. It has been supremely reliable, but then, I've stayed on top of it from the beginning. I purchased 17" AMG Aero's which are better scaled to the vehicle's size than the stock 15", and I have the Euro model with nearly flush bumpers, which greatly enhances the overall look. The car is starting to appreciate in value and is, pond for pound, perhaps the best coupe on the road for the price -- regardless of year.
