Class-Action suit - 1992 300SE W140 chassis

by thegravytrain from Greensboro, NC | March 18, 2013

Mercedes-Benz lost a class-action lawsuit over the W140 chassis (S-Class) vehicles from 1992 and 1993. Anyone buying a car that was involved in a winning class-action lawsuit is asking for trouble. Perhaps the later ones were better, but my 1992 300SE that I bought many years ago was one headache right after the other. Constant problems with engine idling, excessive tire and brake wear issues, uncontrollable "shimmy" in the front end that was never remedied, and a multitude of other problems. The class-action suit was filed over poor reliability and excessive necessary repairs. I'm surprised any of these poor-quality cars are even still on the road. This is coming from someone who has owned MB cars for many years. Old or newer, you're probably ok (to some extent). Stay away from the early W140 chassis cars unless you're willing to sink more money into it than it's worth.

German tank

by SoCal car nut from Camarillo, CA | November 28, 2012

Wife totaled her '98 VW Beetle by driving over a large rock on PCH just north of Neptune's Net. Used the insurance money to buy our '92 400SE, one-owner, with 132K miles, for $4100. It's black with silver lower body cladding, black leather interior, 16" factory chrome wheels, etc. This car is like a little limo, plenty of space in the back seat for my two teen age daughters. Very quiet when driving due to the dual-pane windows (what other cars have dual-pane glass?!), and there's no getting away from the fact that this is a big car. But it has brisk acceleration, more than adequate brakes, nice handling for a car this size, and a luxurious interior. Like the little touches like the switch that flips down the rear seat headrests, folds in the side mirrors, seat memory, umpteen seat adjustments, wood trim, moonroof with sunshade, etc. The overall fit and finish is excellent, as one would expect for a car that cost $80K when it was new. It has held up tremendously well, considering it's now 20 years old! I don't think upkeep expenses will be too bad, because being an early 90's model, it's not too terribly complicated by computerized engine management gadgets and electronic convenience features. Most parts seem to be readily available from either online sources or local parts stores, and there are local mechanics available as well. This car was a great replacement for my wife's '98 VW Beetle, and she really enjoys driving it. The mpg isn't the greatest, but that's okay, it's an S-class! The feeling we get when driving this 400SE is worth the increased insurance and gas costs!

The best of the best

by Had to sell the Porsche so.... from Arizona | May 4, 2007

An S-class Benz is in a league of it's own. They truly don't make cars like this anymore. The W140 chasis remains the best in MB history. I prefered the shorter wheel base of the SE.
