Cars.com National December 12, 2012Vehicle Overview
Mitsubishi's Outlander is the larger of its two SUV offerings and has room for seven occupants. Not to be confused with the smaller Outlander Sport, which has room for only five, the Outlander is redesigned for 2014 with a new exterior and interior. The Outlander competes with the Ford Edge, Kia Sorento and Toyota Highlander.
New for 2014
The Outlander is restyled inside and out for 2014. The new Outlander is sleeker on the outside and carries that into the cabin with new interior materials and design. It loses around 200 pounds of curb weight to increase fuel economy. All-wheel drive is now available on the SE trim level. It was previously only available on the highest-end GT trim. ES models are the entry-level trim.
Exterior
Gone is the aggressive, flat, upright grille of the previous Outlander. The new rounded look also reduces aerodynamic drag by 7 percent to help fuel economy, says Mitsubishi. While 200 pounds have been removed from the Outlander's curb weight, Mitsubishi notes its structural rigidity has been maintained using high-tensile steel in the body's construction. One feature gone for 2014 is the fold-down tailgate, replaced by a traditional liftback.
Optional exterior features include:
- 18-inch alloy wheels
- Fog lamps
- High-intensity-discharge headlights
- Rain-sensing wipers
- Chrome exterior trim
- Power tailgate (available on SE and GT)
Interior
All Outlanders now feature three rows of seating with room for seven occupants, whereas in 2013 the third row was optional. The second and third rows fold flat for maximum cargo room, and the second row also slides and reclines. The Outlander's interior features new cabin materials such as a soft-touch instrument panel, wood grain trim and glossy black center console design.
Interior features include:
- Third-row seating with room for seven occupants
- Climate ducts for second-row passengers
- Tilt/telescoping steering wheel
- Available USB input for iPod
- Available heated front seats
- Available backup camera
- Navigation system (available on SE and GT)
- 710-watt stereo with 10-inch subwoofer (available on SE and GT)
Under the Hood
ES and SE trim levels use a 2.4-cylinder engine that makes 166 horsepower. The engine is paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission and all-wheel drive is available on SE trim levels. The top GT trim uses a V-6 making 224 hp and sends power through a six-speed automatic transmission; all-wheel drive is standard on GT trim levels.
- Front- or all-wheel drive
- Four- or six-cylinder engine
Safety
Three new safety systems are available as optional equipment: lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and forward-collision mitigation. The three systems come together in the Touring Package, which is available on SE and GT models.
Standard safety features include:
- Seven airbags (frontal, side curtain, side-impact and driver's knee)
- Electronic stability control
- Antilock brakes
- Hill start assist
