Expert 2008 Nissan Altima Hybrid review

our expert's take

The timing is excellent for Nissan to join the gas/electric hybrid crowd by boosting the fuel mileage of its midsize Altima sedan.

There has been a sea change in buyers’ attitudes since gas prices went through the roof, and hybrid cars and trucks are getting more attention than ever, along with other fuel sippers. With Altima’s already solid reputation, a hybrid seems brilliant.

Besides getting mileage in the mid-30s, Altima Hybrid also shows some sporty performance. Acceleration is strong, helped out by the high-torque electric motor, and the continuously variable transmission feels agile and responsive, unlike others I could name.

Of course, you can’t be zooming around town and expect to get the best fuel mileage. That becomes a driving game in itself, using the smooth-driving techniques of the so-called hypermilers to maximize miles per gallon. With judicious driving, I was able to beat the 35 mpg for city driving, peaking at about 38.

The hybrid drive system – which uses the electric motor for initial acceleration and low speeds before easing on the gas engine for recharging and higher-speed cruising – works seamlessly with just the occasional surge or shudder when the system switches between gas and electric.

Importantly, the engine shuts off when at a red light or the takeout window. That saves gas that is otherwise wasted in idling. And unlike some other systems, the engine in the Altima shuts off even when the air-conditioning is running and the temperature is well into triple digits.

Altima hybrid faces some formidable competition from the Toyota Camry Hybrid, which uses the same system as the popular Prius and boasts an enviable record for reliability.

And both the Altima and Camry hybrids lack the unique styling that makes Prius as much a fashion statement as an environmental icon.

Nissan Altima Hybrid

Vehicle type: Five-passenger four-door sedan, front-wheel drive.

Engine: Hybrid drive, 105-kilowatt electric motor with a 2.5-liter inline-4, 158 horsepower at 5,200 rpm, 162 pound-feet of torque at 2,800 rpm.

Transmission: Continuously variable.

Wheelbase: 109.3 inches.

Overall length: 189.2 inches.

Curb weight: 3,482 pounds.

EPA rating: 35 city, 32 highway.

Highs: Good gas mileage, sharp performance, attractive interior.

Lows: Pricey with options, poor trunk space, skimpy rear seat.

PERFORMANCE: A strong dose of torque sends Altima jumping from a standstill, powering it up to 60 in a flash. That’s not the way to drive a hybrid for maximum efficiency, so Altima also starts off gradually with just the electric motor in play. Other than sitting silently with the engine off at a stop, the hybrid system is relatively unnoticeable. A bar graph on the dashboard, or a display on the optional video screen, helps the driver moderate between gas and electric to achieve best mileage. A light touch on the throttle is key.

DRIVABILITY: Altima handles well, and the hybrid version shares that attribute. The electric power steering feels refined and connected, with none of the remoteness of some similar systems.

The four-wheel disc brakes are enhanced with antilock, panic-stop brake assist and electronic brake distribution. For safety, Altima comes with an electronic stability system, traction control and full side-curtain airbags.

STYLING: Other than hybrid labels on the trunk and front fenders, it looks like any Altima. That could be an issue for those who want to proclaim their greenness.

INTERIOR: Roomy and attractive, though rear-seat passengers may find the seat cushions are low, which compromises comfort and legroom.

Trunk space is also compromised by the hybrid batteries and other gear, leaving a fairly small space for groceries.

BOTTOM LINE: Is the extra cost of the hybrid over the standard four-cylinder Altima worth it? That’s for you to decide.

Base price: $25,070.

Price as tested: $30,375.

OPTIONS

Connection package, including leather seats and trim, Bose audio upgrade with satellite radio, HomeLink universal transceiver, Bluetooth phone system, rearview mirrors with integrated turn signals, compass and power moonroof, $4,400.

Aluminum kick plates, $170.

Floor mats, $110.

Shipping, $625.

  • The car is worth to buy 👌

I had this car for 5 years now and this car is the best car i ever drive. It’s so fast and fun to drive and it’s a hybrid that’s crazy right? This car feels so luxurious and I did add aftermarket headlights and that car looks now just like the infinity g37 and the price is perfect I can’t believe how cheap I got the car and actually this car parts is so cheap and even if you faced a problem with the transmission or something like that you can fix it for so little amount of money so basically this car is a keeper. By the way Mine is 2009 has 179k miles now.

Roomy, leather interior, great backup camera and GPS. Exterior paint pristine. 100% reliable. I often drive from Orange County to SF and use only one tank of gas.

  • Great car at a great value

I have owned two 2008 Nissan Altima Hybrids. I drive a lot of miles for my job and this car gets good gas mileage and rides well. It is in easy car to spend a few hours in while I drive from city to city. I drove the first one I owned about 160,000 miles. I am selling the second one at 175,000 miles. They have both been nearly trouble free cars. If I could find one with low miles that had the options I want I would buy a third one! That should say how I feel about these cars. Plus, they look great as well.

  • "Nissan, The worst car"

The service I received from dealer and the corporate were the worst. Basically my car was a lemon. First time it broke down I spent 1500 for repairs. The dealer told me it was an electrical problem caused by alarm. Dealer told me that the dealer that sold you the car installed the alarm. This happened at 36500 miles. 500 miles over the warrenty period. I called the Nissan Corp and They did not help me. In July of 2012, 74k miles the car stops working. I towed the car to dealership. The dealer fixed the same issue 4 time. Each time they came up with a different story. First it was the starter $966. Broke down and towed to dealer. Second time the dealer told me it was the rodent that chewed the wires. $566 for the repair. Broke down again and towed third time. Third time the dealer called the corp and the corp recommened to change the battery. $380 for repairs. drove off and broke again. Towed to dealer again the third time after two weeks, they told me the repairs are going to cost 3200. I felt sick to my stomach. I called the Nissan Corporate and asked for assistance. After few days they called me and told me that they can't assisst me at all and I am on my own. Very Very frustrated. I asked the dealer if they are intersted in purchasing the car. The car was purchased around 25k. More than 6k of repairs, the dealer offers me 2000. Never again I will buy a nissan. I DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL.

  • So far, so good.

We just bought this car two months ago to replace a Rav4. The whole idea was to get better mileage. It has worked out very well. The car is very comfortable, has lots of space inside and still gets 32-35 mpg. I realize this is not the 50 mpg that some of the hybrids advertise, but this is a good sized car that is fully loaded. We drove from San Diego to Las Vegas on less than half a tank of gas...

  • Great Gas Milage, Style, and Comfort

I have always been a practical car owner. I decided I wanted a little luxury, but the practical part of me just couldn't give in completely. So, to comprimise I decided a luxry hybrid. The Altima has the reliable technology of the Toyota Hybrid, but Nissan "tweaked" is a bit to give it more horsepower. The result is a spunky sedan that boasts 34 MPG in the city and close to that on the highway. I do recommed owners do a little research on how hybrids work so they get the most from the hybrid milage.
