"I"ve had problems with the CVT, whining noise, and more. The CVT lags and "grinds" at about 1500 rpms. The steering whine is totally unacceptable. After going to the dealer several times, opening a complaint file with Nissan, and going to the BBB for arbitration, they FINALLY sent a regional tech to fix it. Well, 700 miles later all issues are returning. The dealer no longer chooses to help, and after just three months, I sold the car and took a loss. Don't buy an Altima! Just read consumer reviews. I wish I did. I am very happy with the car I bought."

"2013 Altima purchased 11/2012. currently has approx 6000 miles. It has been to 2 different dealers 3 times and is about to go back for a fourth visit. The vehicle is noisy. The engine makes an unacceptable growling noise and produces a vibration rattle. Per a tech...the transmission is new in the 2013's and is problematic. The engine RPM's are probably kept too low to help with the EPA mileage ratings. Nissan has a mess on their hands. There are numerous complaints by owners including a manager at one of the dealers. Unless they find a cure soon, this is NOT a vehicle to purchase!!!"

"When I read the user reviews, I was a little skeptical about this car. Inclined my mind towards another 2013 model. However, when I went through all reviews, it had a pattern - CVT issues, some recall issues. So thought may be a paid reviews and went for a test drive. (Note I did test drive on other 2013 model). My observations: Exterior observations: Altima looks like a premium class vehicle compared to other model. (more length, width and height) Interior: Altima wins here. leg space, comfort seats, nice non cluttered console. I assure you don't get a back pain after a long drive. Performance: if you apply more gas, CVT behaves odd, give optimum thrust and the car get to speed 60m/hr within 4-5 sec. Only win for the other car is resale value. Advice: Don't go with reviews. Do a test drive."

About to be returned under Lemon Law

"This is the 3rd Nissan vehicle I've owned and is by far the most disappointing. I purcahsed the 2.5l S model after much research into other vehicles in the mid-size category. I needed a car large enough to transport my 2 young children as well as get decent gas milage since I travel 70-80 miles round trip minimum each day. The advetised 38mpg highway was a major motivator into my purcahse. I purcahsed the vehicle with under 250 miles on the clock about 5 months ago. Since then I have had nothing but issues with it. From the get go, I knew something was up when I started getting 28mpg on a tank of fuel with about 440 highway miles out of the 480 miles to tank fill up. Around 1000 miles the vehicle started having starting issues. There are two situations that will randolmy occur with my car: 1-The car turns over vary hard and struggles to start as if the can is low on fuel. This happens at any fuel level. 2-The car turns over but fails to start. The computer times out after a short time to keep the starter from buring out. Again, fuel level is not a culprit. To date the vehicle has been in for service 5 times for the issues above, and has stumped the Nissan service crews (both local and national). I now have a computer modual installed under my seat to log all driving conditions until it happens again. I have recently filed my paperwork for Lemon Law and am now negotiating the return of the car to Nissan North America. I have been told this is only happening with my vehicle but then again, isn't that the definition of a lemon. That coupled with the issue of actual gas mileage has pushed me to look for other brands. Other issues I have found with the car: -The sun visors are usless. They are very short and do not help if you need to move them to the door window locations. -The low idle / low speed vibration that others are complaining about is annoying and seems to be getting worse as time goes on. -The plastic bumpers are very frail at tempertures around freezing. I hit a small snow/ice chunk at about 10 miles an hour and it put a huge 12" crack in the front bumper. -The blower fan has needed cleaning twice now for small leaves getting in past the cabin filter. (Apparently a cabin filter isn't supposed to filter out leaves?! It makes me wonder how much it's actually doing if leaves can get by it. But I've been told by the service department that "It happens all the time.") Besides that, the car is ok. The seats are comfortable and child car seats fit decent (both front and rear facing). But the issues I've had with the gas mileage and the starting issues are enough to make me stray away from another Nissan purcahse. Which is disappointing because the Altima had so much to offer."

Some Hits and Some Misses

"The Altima is a nice-looking vehicle that does the job that we need from a mid-priced family sedan, but some well-documented shortcomings spoil the fun. After driving the car for a while, you get the feeling that this car was released to the dealers before all the issues were worked out. This is a shame, because this could really be a great car. Here are my thoughts: 1) Exterior: Nice looking sporty design that bridges the gap between the excessively curvy Sonata and the bland Camry and Passat. Well done, although a true blue color choice would have been welcome. 2) Interior: Home run Nissan! Immediately you feel as though you are sitting in a vehicle well beyond this price point. Very nicely finished with good quality materials and a feeling of plushness. Excellent instrument cluster and a great sound system on the SV. Strangely enough, the much-touted seats are what I feel is the low point. The head rests are much too far forward and the seat bottom is angled back too steeply. Unlike the competition, there is no adjustment available for seat tilt or lumbar on the cloth seats. Warning: There is a well-documented issue with the passenger airbag warning light coming on intermittently, even with an adult in the passenger seat. 3) The ride: Takes the bumps well while also providing good cornering. Excellent braking. Excellent road noise suppression on the highway. Unfortunately, the steering is stiff and overboosted so small adjustments in the wheel yield too much response from the vehicle. At highway speeds the car seems to wander left and right, especially on concrete highways with drainage grooves. 4) Performance: Strong acceleration from the 2.5L engine. Noisy drivetrain, even at moderate throttle. From a standing start, the drivetrain annoyingly rumbles and growls at 1000-1500 RPM, creating a feeling that the engine is being bogged down. There is also a well-documented high-pitched whine from the power steering system that can be heard at idle and very low speed driving. 5) Utility: Very roomy interior with plenty of leg and head room. Ample trunk space. The keyless entry and push button start are very convenient. 6) Details, details: Here is where I think Nissan misses the boat. There?s a lack of attention to fine detail that I always took for granted on my Acura and Toyotas. For instance: -- On the over-sized remote, the panic button is the same size as all the other buttons and not recessed or protected from false presses in any way. Only the unlock button is textured so you can feel for it in your pocket. -- The AC compressor always runs, even when heating the cabin. The procedure to turn it off on page 4-30 in the manual doesn?t work. -- On the steering wheel controls, there is no texturing on the audio buttons so the driver can?t ?feel? for the one he wants. -- The left foot rest pad is the size of a child?s foot, so the carpeting above it gets dirty over time. -- The interior trunk release button is too small; you can?t find it at night after turning off the ignition because it doesn?t retain its illumination like the window control buttons. -- The windshield wiper leaves an unswept 4 inch gap on the driver?s left side, leaving a noticeable blind spot. Hopefully the 2014 model will overcome the shortcomings of this 2013 version."
