Expert 2013 Nissan Cube review

Vehicle Overview

The Cube, which has been a hit in Japan for some time now, landed in the U.S. a few years ago. Competitors include the Scion xB and Kia Soul. All Cubes come with an electronic stability system and six airbags.
New for 2013
There are no significant changes for 2013.
Exterior
The Cube’s tail features a rearward-jutting bumper. A wraparound window replaces the passenger-side exterior rear pillar, though there’s a hidden pillar on the inside so it doesn’t make for blind-spot-free sightlines. Exterior features include:

  • Swing-out rear door, rather than liftgate
  • Standard 15-inch steel wheels with plastic covers; 16-inch wheels available
  • Body-colored side mirrors
  • Optional rear spoiler

Interior
The five-seat Cube’s cabin sports some unorthodox styling. The dash has wavelike contours and the tachometer is white, but the speedometer fades to blue. “Water drop” accents include ripple effects in the headliner, cupholders and stereo speakers. Nissan says it styled the backseat after a sofa; the seats recline and move forward and backward. The seats also fold, though they don’t yield a flat load floor. There’s a deep storage well behind the seats. Interior features include:

  • Light gray or graphite interior colors
  • Standard power windows and locks with remote keyless entry
  • Optional keyless access with push-button start
  • Standard manual air conditioning
  • Optional automatic climate control
  • USB/iPod-compatible stereo with steering-wheel audio controls
  • Optional Rockford Fosgate stereo with satellite radio

Under the Hood
There is one engine available for the Cube. Mechanical features include:

  • 122-horsepower, 1.8-liter four-cylinder
  • Standard six-speed manual transmission
  • Optional continuously variable automatic transmission

Safety
Standard safety features include:

  • Antilock brakes
  • Electronic stability system
  • Active front head restraints
  • Seat-mounted side-impact airbags for the front seats and side curtain airbags for both rows

  • Interior room is unbelievable.

Wife's car; bought new in '13, over 70K miles on. Only complaint I have is road noise on the freeway; apparently Nissan didn't think sound reduction was important, as there is little in the way of noise insulation. Nevertheless, she LOVES this vehicle.

  • Excellent car and a shame its no longer in the US

I own two of these Cubes. A 2009 and a 2013. The 2009 is driven by my Mother, and the 13 is my daily ride. Timing Chain is the best point for this car...no belt replacement at 100K. CVT oil change once a year, regular engine oil changes, Very Very solid. I'm 6ft 3in, and they are very truck like in seating. LOVE the room inside. To me, looks are not everything, room, usefulness and ease of maintenance fits the bill. Excellent cars.

  • Transmission and alternator problems

It is 2013 Nissan Cube with 98 k miles. I just drove 6 k miles on it. And now it has transmisson and alternator problem. I went Nissan dealer and they said that I need to pay for around $5000 to replace it. It’s not reliable car.

  • Most reliable car

The car is amazing. Far drives are more comfortable then imagined not only for me but my children too. No complaint of having to stop and stretch or their backs hurt.

  • Love this car!

I seriously love this car. I first spotted my Bali Blue car online for a good price and low miles. I spoke with the manager and was able to negotiate a better price. It all seemed to good to be true. However, when I first pulled up to the sales lot, I wanted to turn around and go home. It was easy to spot, no way was it blending in. I drive a midsize SUV and the Cube seemed like a joke by size. I kept thinking "matchbox" and "clown car" just by looking at the size. I wanted to cry, but i was told to at least look at the car, since we had driven so far to see it. I was skeptical even when I sat inside. Although it was roomier than I expected, I still worried that there wasn't enough space for passengers. To my surprise, there's way more room that you'd think by looking from the outside. I'm 5'3 and one of my passengers was around 6'0 tall, he sat in the back with no trouble. I began my test drive and was in love with the ride and the car in general. I became attached. There are a numerous amount of cup holders. There's a pretty distinctive pattern design in the interior of the Cube but it didn't bother me one way or another. I love the iPod connection and the bluetooth. The cargo area is not huge but I don't need a ton of room. I think the car is perfect for me and my quirky personality. I think my Cube is adorable and I don't have any complaints. The one thing I wish my Cube had is the interior lights beneath the dashboard and the rear camera. Nonetheless, I can't complain about this car. Initially, I just wanted a reliable and affordable car but I receive more. I was scared that I'd regret this purchase, but I feel as if I finally have a car that I love.

  • Easiest entry, exit of all small cars I tried !

Bought this car because I have a stiff leg and was so easy to get in and out of without pain! Very easy to stear and maneuver ! The price was a big plus. The room inside is surprising for a small car and it gets great gas mileage . Really can't think of anything I would change. The side opening back door is a grreat feature for ease of access . Would recommend my car to anyone. :)

  • Wonderful small car

Excellent handling, spacious interior, has good power for local and freeway driving. Wind noise at high speeds. Rear seats don't fold flat but has not been much of a problem.
