Vehicle Overview

Porsche has redesigned its two-seat Boxster roadster for the 2013 model year, and the new model weighs less but features more powerful flat-six engines. Offered in base and S form, the Boxster hits dealerships in summer 2012. Competitors include the Audi TT, BMW Z4 and Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class.

Exterior

Porsche's redesigned Boxster is both familiar and different at the same time. The classic low-slung roadster shape carries over for the 2013 model year, but all-new styling introduces a design theme with more creases and sharper edges, particularly along the sides of the car leading to the scalloped intakes and over the rear wheels. The headlight assemblies have a more vertical shape than before but don't dramatically alter the front-end. Around back, Porsche elegantly integrates the rear spoiler with the taillights. Exterior features include:

  • 18-inch wheels; 19- or 20-inch wheels available
  • Longer wheelbase and wider track
  • Electric soft-top can open or close in nine seconds and operates at vehicle speeds up to 31 mph, according to Porsche
  • LED daytime running lights and taillights
  • Available bi-xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights

Interior

The Boxster gets a redesigned interior that follows in the footsteps of other recent Porsches by adopting upscale materials befitting the car's premium price (the new Boxster starts at $49,500 plus a destination fee). The padded dashboard looks good, and a slimmer version of Porsche's button-centric center console separates the bucket seats. Interior features include:

  • Audio system includes 7-inch screen on dash
  • 4.6-inch screen integrated with gauge cluster
  • Available Bose premium stereo
  • Available dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Available navigation system

Under the Hood

The Boxster is powered by a 265-horsepower, 2.7-liter flat-six engine while the Boxster S gets a 315-hp, 3.4-liter flat-six. A six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is available for both engines. Mechanical features include:

  • Mid-engine, rear-wheel drive
  • Mechanically locking rear differential
  • Available Sport Chrono Package with launch control (seven-speed transmission)

Safety

Safety features include:

  • Antilock brakes
  • Electronic stability system
