The four-seat Porsche Panamera is a large four-door hatchback that's intended to compete with full-size luxury cars like the BMW 7 Series, Aston Martin Rapide S and Mercedes-Benz S-Class. For 2013, Porsche adds a GTS model and a Platinum Edition to the Panamera lineup. A Panamera S Hybrid that uses a 47-horsepower electric motor and a nickel-metal-hydride battery pack is also available.

New for 2013
The new Panamera GTS makes 430 hp and 384 pounds-feet of torque from a retuned naturally aspirated 4.8-liter V-8 engine that's shared with other Panamera models. The all-wheel-drive GTS comes with Porsche's Sport Chrono Plus Package, a performance exhaust, upgraded brakes and a modified suspension with a lower ride height. The exterior gets aerodynamic enhancements and gloss-black accents, while the cabin has leather and Alcantara upholstery, a sport design steering wheel, special seats and a display in the instrument cluster that shows lateral and longitudinal acceleration.
There's also a new Platinum Edition that adds premium standard features and unique styling inside and out.
The Panamera's profile and rear view are a lightning rod for criticism, though the style plays a part in the car's large backseat and versatile cargo hatch. The main visible distinction between the V-6 version and the higher trim levels is a matte-black trim surrounding the side windows in place of chrome. Exterior features include:

- Available 19- or 20-inch wheels
- Standard four-position power rear spoiler
- Standard bi-xenon high-intensity-discharge headlamps
The Panamera seats four people. The backseat comprises two bucket seats with a flow-through console between them. All Panamera models have a 7-inch touch-screen and a 4.8-inch color display in the instrument cluster.
The cargo area measures 15.7 cubic feet, but when you fold the backseat there's 44.6 cubic feet of space. Interior features include:

- Optional 16-speaker Burmester premium stereo
Under the Hood
All non-hybrid Panameras use a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission. A Sport Chrono Plus Package adds a setting for sportier drivetrain and suspension settings, as well as a launch-control feature for faster sprints from a standing start. A standard stop-start system turns off the engine when the Panamera comes to a complete stop. It starts again automatically when the driver lifts off the brake pedal. Mechanical features include:
- Standard 300-hp, 3.6-liter V-6
- Optional 400- or 430-hp V-8
- Optional 500-, 540- or 550-hp, twin-turbo V-8
- Rear- or all-wheel drive
- Optional active suspension
The Panamera's front occupants get frontal, knee and seat-mounted side-impact airbags. There are also side-impact airbags for the rear seats as well as side curtain airbags to cover the side windows of both rows. Additional safety features include:
- Antilock brakes
- Electronic stability system and traction control
- Available adaptive headlamps
- Available adaptive cruise control
- Available blind spot warning system
Panamera S Hybrid
The Panamera S Hybrid features a 333-hp, supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine; a 47-hp electric motor and a nickel-metal-hydride battery pack. The system powers the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The car gets an EPA-estimated 22/30 mpg city/highway.
Porsche says the car can drive on electric power alone up to 46 mph. The engine stops completely when the car comes to a halt. Standard features include 18-inch wheels with low-rolling-resistance tires, an adaptive air suspension, automatic air conditioning, heated front seats and leather.
