Vehicle Overview

The five-seat Subaru Impreza compact sedan and four-door hatchback was completely redesigned for 2012 and receives only minor changes for 2013. The Impreza competes with the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, as well as the Chevrolet Cruze, Ford Focus and Hyundai Elantra, most of which have been recently redesigned or introduced. None of these competing models offers standard all-wheel drive, while the Impreza does.

New for 2013

The Subaru Impreza gets standard Bluetooth connectivity with audio streaming and steering-wheel controls plus an iPod/USB port. Uplevel trims with the optional navigation system now have a backup camera.

Exterior

The Impreza's styling is more mature than the 2011 generation's, yet it avoids blandness. It adopts Subaru's new hexagonal grille. While the wheelbase has increased almost an inch, the overall exterior dimensions are virtually unchanged. The A-pillars anchor almost 8 inches farther forward, giving the windshield a "faster" angle. Exterior features include:

  • 15-inch wheels standard; 16- and 17-inch alloy wheels available
  • Power side mirrors; available heated side mirrors and windshield wiper de-icer
  • Available fog lights
  • Available power moonroof

Interior

Leather upholstery comes on the Limited and Sport Limited trim levels, along with automatic climate control and premium instrumentation. Materials quality has improved on all trim levels compared to the prior-generation Impreza. Interior features include:

  • Standard tilt/telescoping steering wheel
  • Standard split-folding backseat
  • Standard remote keyless entry
  • Standard Bluetooth and iPod connectivity
  • Available navigation system
  • Available heated front seats

Under the Hood

The Impreza's 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine has dual overhead camshafts and makes 148 horsepower and 145 pounds-feet of torque. Mechanical features include:

  • Standard all-wheel drive
  • Five-speed manual or continuously variable automatic transmission
  • Engine uses regular gas

Safety

The Impreza has seven airbags: the required frontal pair, front-seat-mounted side-impact torso airbags, side curtains and a knee airbag for the driver. Other safety features include:

  • Four-wheel-disc antilock brakes
  • Electronic stability system
