"Very happy with our new outback. Great ride, quiet cabin, terrific safety ratings. Big payload. Power's adequate and fuel economy very good for this size vehicle. If your priorities are: Safety, Utility, efficiency, reliability, this is a great choice."

"I own a 2010 outback 2.5i Premium. Its always fun to drive when raining or snow. Took this baby to Lake Tahoe loaded up and did not have problems going up the mountain with a 4 cyl. MPG is better than the CRV front wheel drive. I was getting a combo of 26.3 and highway of 29.7"

"At 25,000 miles, my Subaru Outback 4 cyl CVT remains impressive in every way. I can drive it 550 miles from NJ to Ohio without stopping and still arrive feeling great. (31.9 mpg) It's been flawless in all weather conditions. It averages 26 mpg around northern NJ. The lowest average occurred when I spent several hours negotiating the October blizzard. That night and the following state-of-emergency days resulted in a stop-and-go 23 mpg average. The Boxer engine coupled with the CVT is super-smooth and the combination has plenty of power for any merge or pass. I came from a beautiful Acura TL and don't miss it at all. I test drove every luxury SUV (including the Cayenne) before deciding on the Outback and it definitely was the right decision."

"The 2010 Outback is the largest Subaru we have had. It offers the same great All wheel drive which works better in snow than my 4WD pickup. It has lots of room and rides better than any of our earlier (2003 Forester) subarus. We got the 3.6L six because we wanted a bit more power. It get between 22 and 26 mpg, with the worst being on interstate at 75. 23k miles so far and no problems of any kind."

"Really happy with the new Outback. Lots of room, handles great in snow. Looks sleek from the back and side, but not crazy about the rather large and fancy hood shape. Gave only 4 stars for interior design because I am petite (5'1"), and I can't adjust the seat high enough to feel like I have a good view of everything. Same problem with the Forester and the older Outback."

Poor Man's Audi? No maybe Smart Man's Audi!

"My brother in law did extensive research on a good car that is easy to drive for my wife and came up with the Outback. I am hooked. The AWD is fantastic, and oh, the suspension; it seems to handle everything so well. I have had 2 Honda Civics, 1 BMW 325i (a 2.5 liter pocket rocket), 1 Mercedes C-200 (solid like a rock) and a Toyota minivan (great utility, but featherweight doors), but overall, with the Audi-like drive and German like build quality and the confidence from AWD, I think I am hooked on Subarus. In the snow, I think it cannot be beaten, and it must be called the "official car of Boulder, Colorado" for a reason. My dealer says it is called the poor man's Audi; maybe it should be called the Smart Man's Audi! The ride is AMAZING. TRY ONE!!!"

"We have purchased the SubRu Outback in April 2010. We chose the 4cyl version. I was a bit skeptical of the performance having tried other 4cyl models before. To this day I am still impressed of it's capacity in all conditions whether driving in hot temperature in the summer or very cold and snowy conditions of the Quebec area, this engine is working very well in collaboration with the cvt transmission"

Problems not being addressed

"I purchased an Outback based on Subaru's history for reliability and customer satisfaction. I may be one of the few dissatisfied owners to review this vehicle, but there are issues that need to be addressed. Most of them are annoyances but, darn it, I like to be comfortable and enjoy driving my car. The major issue right now is that my brake pedal makes a metal clunk sound when it's released. The dealer was told by Subaru that there are thousands of complaints about this and it's in the master cylinder. But since it is not a safety concern, there will be no attempt to correct it. NICE!! The service department has also been trying to fix a fan noise issue with foam and it's not working. The headlamp height and field of coverage is terrible unless the high beams are on. If you have the lights set for auto on/off, they don't go off when you turn the car off, if the key is in the ignition. So, say you want to listen to the radio or jump out to gas up, you must manually turn the lights off or remove the key. Visibility out the back window is not good, needs a backup camera for safety. CVT transmission, takes some getting used to the sound and performance and tends to surge forward occasionally if you lighten up pressure on the brake. Seats and interior are comfortable however, there is no heater/ac duct for the rear passengers, which seems like an unnecessary oversight. Cargo area is sufficient but the design of the cargo cover is terrible and cheap. Bluetooth sound quality is poor. Radio is mediocre, dash speakers rattle. My car is loaded and the side view mirrors do not fold in..thought this was a standard feature. Also have to remember to manually lock the doors as gearshift does not activate them, I guess this was a luxury item on my other vehicles. A lot of these things I can live with, except for the noise in the brakes and fan...very annoying and not sure it's worth it."
