The XV Crosstrek gains a hybrid drivetrain for the 2014 model year that gets an EPA-estimated 28/34 mpg city/highway and 31 mpg in combined driving — a 3-mpg improvement over a conventionally powered XV Crosstrek with an automatic transmission, which is rated at 25/33 mpg or 28 mpg combined. The XV Crosstrek hybrid comes with all-wheel drive, which is common for a Subaru but rare among hybrids.
The hybrid system consists of a 148 horsepower, 2.0-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder that teams with a continuously variable automatic transmission that has a 13.4-hp electric motor integrated with it. A 0.6-kilowatt-hour nickel-metal-hydride battery is located beneath the cargo floor. Total vehicle weight has increased by about 300 pounds. Besides supplementing the gas engine, the hybrid system's electric motor can accelerate the vehicle on its own when accelerating lightly, according to Subaru.
Apart from a few specific details, the XV Crosstrek Hybrid looks nearly identical to its gas-powered sibling. The hybrid has unique alloy wheels with what Subaru calls an aerodynamic design, and there are hybrid badges on the front doors and liftgate. An exclusive exterior color — Plasma Green Pearl — is available. There are a number of changes you can't see, though, like active grille shutters and retuned suspension and steering systems. There's more sound insulation too.
Inside, the gauges gain blue accents and the multifunction screen can display an energy-flow representation of the hybrid system.
