Toyota's second-largest SUV took model-year 2012 off and comes back updated for 2013. The 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser gets more standard features and more off-road capability. It slots below the Sequoia in the automaker's lineup in size, but it is more expensive.
The Land Cruiser seats eight passengers on three rows of seats. Because its price is squarely in premium large SUV territory, competitors include the Audi Q7, Infiniti QX56 and Land Rover Range Rover.
Exterior
Changes to its exterior are minor; the Land Cruiser continues to look like a larger version of Toyota's midsize Highlander SUV. Although it still uses a traditional body-on-frame design, the Land Cruiser trades some of its blocky exterior styling cues for more fluid lines and an overall polished look. A revised grille, LED daytime running lights, more sculpted bumper design and new chrome trim make the Land Cruiser look more upscale. An additional color, Pearl White, is new for 2013.
Interior
The Land Cruiser's interior dimensions remain the same. Headroom and legroom are unchanged and measure less than the midsize Highlander's, making this large SUV's interior feel smaller than it looks. The cabin sees updates like a new woodgrain finish, brighter silver instrument panel and chrome-plated air registers. Also new is Toyota's Multi-Terrain Monitor, which displays multiple views of the SUV's exterior.

Under the Hood
The Land Cruiser's thirsty 381-horsepower, 5.7-liter V-8 engine and six-speed automatic transmission return for the 2013 model year. The powertrain is EPA-rated at 13/18 mpg city/highway. Land Cruiser is equipped for off-road use with a solid rear axle and multilink rear suspension. The Land Cruiser has a Low gear, an adaptive suspension and a feature called Crawl Control that manages the throttle while the driver steers over obstacles. The Land Cruiser's new Off-Road Turn Assist feature automatically adjusts the brakes to help it make sharper turns off-road.
Mechanical features include:
- Six-speed automatic transmission
- Full-time four-wheel drive
- 8,200-pound towing capacity
- Multi-Terrain system alters wheel slip based on the terrain, including different settings for mud, sand and rocks

Standard safety features include:
- Seat-mounted side-impact airbags for first and second rows
- Driver and front passenger knee airbags
- Side curtain airbags for all three rows
- Electronic stability system
- Active front head restraints
- Antilock brakes
- Trailer-sway control
