"We have had both of these makes/models and found the Sienna to be a much more comfortable/smooth ride, and to have features the Odyssey lacked in the same trim. This has been an extremely reliable car for us."

"This car was one of the best investments I ever made. I had not wanted to get another minivan, but needed the passenger + cargo space + AWD for hills in the wintertime. This car seats 7 people plus luggage, groceries, you name it. I moved 3 kids into college, taking mattresses, furniture, appliances, and more. Yet it drives like a sedan and every passenger is comfortable. I have not spent one dime on major repairs to this car. All it has gotten are regular oil changes and new tires. So glad I listened to my mechanic and bought the Toyota instead of my second choice, a Lincoln Aviator."

Don't Buy This Car

"Without a doubt, this is the worst car I have ever owned. The 2004 Sienna only has 65K miles, but the automatic braking system has failed ($4K to repair), the tires have been replaced 3 times, and the car is in constant need of maintance (hose leaks, freeze plugs, brake pads, battery, etc). The dealer says it is perplexed. The car is in the shop every 5K miles for oil change/rotate tires, etc, yet every time I am there they seem to find something else wrong. At frst I thought the dealer was milking me, but I took the car to another repair shop and they found the same items. The dealer is now giving me a discount on repairs, because I started screaming in the showroom about how poorly the Sienna is made. I also now get free loaners because the car spends so much time at the dealer. The dealer told me the next two things that will probably break are the automatic sliding door cables ($2K per door to repair -- I see lots of comments on this in other reviews), and at about 70K miles, the catalytic converter fails. And, to add insult to injury, the car drives like a big box, with no pick up whatsoever. If you need to jump into highway traffic, you better give yourself plenty of room cause it takes a long time to reach 60 MPH! My mom owned a toyota back in the day, and the car was built like a tank -- i drove it when I was a teenager and it survivied years of abuse from me and my sister. The maintenance on this Sienna costs more than the maintenance on our BMW. Don't be fooled by the low sales price. Spend a bit more on a quality car and save yourself the headache."

OK Car, BAD Doors, AWFUL Tires

"To this day (the current 2011 model), this car is using a plastic coated steel wire as part of power sliding door mechanism. The plastic coating in my van (2004 Sienna XLE Limited AWD) dried up and cracked, exposing the steel wire. When this happens, the door will be hard to open. When the steel is completely exposed, eventually the cable can snap. It happened to me and my doors (yes, both sliding doors) are only in manual mode now. I was told that it would cost $2000/door to fix. It is NOT covered under ANY of the warranty. Front doors have welding issues that when you open and close them, they make a LOUD "snapping" noise. The model that I have came with runflat tires. They are convenient when you have a flat. But they wear out faster that regular tires and very expensive to replace. If you have an AWD version like mine, you have to replace all 4 at the same time. Each tire can cost you around $250 installed."

"We bought a 2004 LE new at the beginning of that year and have had it ever since. It's been 100% reliable. I was shocked at how fast it was off the showroom floor but after 120k it's not quite as quick. Fantastic on the highway but a little harsh over expansion joints. Unexpected problems include the driver's side door catch breaking off the inside of the door. Eventually I'll get it fixed, but for now we just have to remember to hold the door as we open it. The DVD entertainment and JBL sound system are fantastic. Road noise is a little louder in the 2nd and 3rd rows than I expected (maybe an opportunity for a Lexus Minivan, if they can stomach making one.) Interior usability is absolutely amazing. Mileage for such a gigantic car is also off the hook. Installed new rotors at 100k; not sure why other reviewer was complaining about having to do it at 90k. It happens, dude. You also have to replace the pads and tires every so often and change the oil. It's a car, not a painting. One nanny feature the wife and I both hate: don't leave your keys in the car when you close the door; it has a nasty habit of locking you out. Also wish we'd ponied up for the power liftgate; it's pretty heavy."

"Like hundreds (thousands?) of other '04 Sienna owners, we have experienced a failure of the passenger side slider door motor -TWICE. Toyota know they have a design flaw on their hands and yet, amazingly, is doing NOTHING about it. The repair costs $1500-2000 each time. We've also had numerous other quality issues - interior trim pieces breaking, Cd player dying JUST after the warranty period expired, and several others. We've purchased a dozen new cars over the years, and the Sienna was easily the WORST. We bought a Toyota largely based on their supposed reliability; but we've learned, like thousands of other owners, that this was a sham."

"2004 AWD XLE. Run Flat tires are not a good idea. I now run regulars, and a spare tire kit in trunk. Auto sliding doors freeze in winter, keep a can of silicone handy. If you don't get them closed because of ice, the car beeps because the door is open. Alloy wheels started rusting at 3 years. I have been told the power steering rack is leaking, and I am trying to fix with an additive. Brakes warped at 80,000 miles, right passenger window came off track at 90,000. The kick was driving down the interstate last week, and half the bumper came off and started dragging on the ground while on vacation. We duct taped it together, (fortunately we had some). Had it been more damaged, it would have been $7000, however, we accepted the scraped paint and the body shop was able to put new clips on for $118. But really? The bumper came off while driving. This isn't a 30 year old Ford, it's a 7 year old Toyota."
