Expert 2014 Toyota Tacoma review

our expert's take
Our expert's take

our expert's take

Vehicle Overview

The Toyota Tacoma midsize pickup truck is available in three cab styles: regular cab, Access Cab and Double Cab. Regular and Access cabs come with 6-foot beds, while the Double Cab can be had with either a 5- or 6-foot bed. The Tacoma can seat up to five people in certain configurations. It competes with the Nissan Frontier.

Much of the Tacoma’s appeal comes from its various special models and packages. The TRD Off-Road Package is perhaps the most popular, with a combination of appearance and performance items. Included are progressive-rate front springs, Bilstein-brand shocks, BFGoodrich Rugged Trail tires, 16-inch alloy wheels and TRD badging. The TRD Sport Package offers a monochromatic appearance, street-tuned suspension and lower-profile tires on 17-inch wheels.
New for 2014
Toyota has dropped the street-performance X-Runner version of the Tacoma, but the truck gains an available SR Package that includes fog lights on V-6 versions; smoked headlamps; and color-keyed door handles, bumpers, mirror caps and grille surround.

Exterior Highlights

  • 115-volt power outlet in cargo bed on TRD packages
  • Dent-resistant composite inner liner in cargo bed
  • Available skid plate for engine
  • Regular cab Tacomas include standard 15-inch wheels
  • 16-, 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels available

Interior Highlights

  • Fabric upholstery; available heated front seats
  • Tilt/telescoping steering wheel
  • Air conditioning
  • Available power windows and locks
  • Available leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Available cruise control

Under the Hood

  • 159-horsepower, 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine
  • Available 236-hp, 4.0-liter V-6
  • Both engines run on regular gas
  • Five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission for four-cylinder trucks
  • Six-speed manual or five-speed automatic for V-6 trucks
  • Standard automatic limited-slip differential

Safety Features

  • Side-impact and side curtain airbags
  • Antilock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist
  • Traction control
  • Electronic stability system
  • Three-point seat belts in all seating positions
  • Driver and front-passenger active head restraints
  • Available backup camera

  • Purchased this truck new ten years ago, four door, six

Purchased this truck new ten years ago, four door, six foot bed, towing package- fuel mileage is not the best (16mpg avg) due to the towing gear ratio, however I tow a lot of boats up to 22 feet and have never had a problem. Currently have 80,000 miles with only routine manufacturer recommended maintenance. Only negative, my wife finds the truck too long (19 feet) for the mall parking spaces.

  • Great Truck?? With Needs!!

Overall the 2014 Tacoma 4.0L DBL Cab Long bed is a great vehicle. However, the suspension (shocks) should have been more heavy duty. Also, the AC system doesn't seem to be adequate for the vehicle. Perhaps a larger capacity system should be considered.

  • After 9 years of owning my 2014 Tacoma

First new vehicle I've ever bought, and 47,500 miles and 9 years into owning it I've had an offer to sell my 4wd Base model for a higher price than I paid for it. It's had zero issues and rides like a Cadillac compared to my 1994. It gets 22mpg, but I wish it was lighter and smaller and got 30 mpg, but Americans demand bigger and better ride when it's real intent should be an economy truck not a midsize truck that is as heavy older full size trucks. Bench seat doesn't give enough room for passengers knees if the passenger is as tall as the driver. It handles and drives great, and 4wd works great, and so far retained 102% of its resale value, how could I say anything bad about it.

  • Reliable Toyota Tacoma doesn’t disappoint

I have had this truck for over 8 years now with over 115,000 miles. It has be perfect mechanically. The only things done to my truck other than routing oil changes has been tires, brakes, spark plug change and battery replacement. It gets 23-25 mpg with the v-6. Paint and finish is superb as the truck still looks and drives like new. No wonder everyone says you can’t beat a Toyota. The Chevy Silverado that I had lost an engine twice in the first 100,000 miles. I am hooked on Toyota now. Just wish they had real steel chrome bumpers on the new models.

  • Most reliable vehicle I owned. Holds value

Everything was perfect for my needs. No bells or whistles..just a good simple vehicle for work. Great on gas mileage. Manual transmission, went in to 4or a little sluggish but did the job. I worked in hospice and this vehicle took me where I needed to be..no matter the terrain or road conditions.

  • Reliable and comfortable

This is a reliable truck. If I had to buy it again I would have gotten the larger 6 cylinder engine. The 4 cylinder is underpowered resulting in very non responsive acceleration. Also the difference in mileage between the 4 and 6 cylinder is insignificant. But otherwise can’t complain. It drives well, so far It’s proven to be very reliable transportation and it is a comfortable ride for a truck.
