Vehicle Overview

Toyota changed the look of its subcompact Yaris in 2012, dropped the sedan version and stretched the overall length of the car. The Yaris competes in a busy field of small cars that includes the Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Accent and Mazda2. Available as either a two- or four-door hatchback, the Yaris is offered in three trim levels: base L, LE and sportier SE.

New for 2013

The base Yaris gets an upgraded stereo, but there are no other significant changes for 2013.

Exterior

Exterior features include:

  • 15-inch wheels with covers standard; optional 16-inch alloy wheels
  • Available fog lights and smoked headlamps (SE)
  • Available rear spoiler
  • Available power side mirrors

Interior

L trims have manual windows and a fold-down rear bench seat. LE and SE models get power windows, a 60/40-split folding rear seat, steering-wheel audio controls, and soft-touch dash and sill inserts. (Those inserts are hard plastic in the L.)

In addition to that, SE models add cruise control — a stand-alone option on the LE — sport seats with more bolstering and different fabric, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearshift. Interior features include:

  • Standard air conditioning
  • Standard power locks
  • Standard CD stereo with iPod connectivity

Under the Hood

Mechanical features include:

  • 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine makes 106 horsepower and 103 pounds-feet of torque
  • Five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission
  • Sport-tuned suspension and steering on SE

Safety

Safety features include:

  • Nine airbags
  • Antilock brakes
  • Electronic stability system with traction control
