Volkswagen introduced this high-performance version of its compact hatchback for 2012. The Golf R gets a 256-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual transmission. All-wheel drive is standard, and the five-seat Golf R competes with the Subaru Impreza WRX STI and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.

Abandoning Volkswagen's once-ubiquitous plunging grille, the Golf R's bumper separates the grille and large air dam. Additional badges and a redesigned rear with twin exhaust pipes set the Golf R apart from the regular Golf. Exterior features include:
