"Purchased a 2012 Golf but previously owned an 08 Rabbit. These models are often overlooked but provide a great balance of economy, reliability, and refinement. The interior finish is excellent and controls are well placed. My only minor gripe would be that the power steering takes away the road feedback completely which is a move away from the old days. In the long run however, I will probably appreciate this."

"I have had my new Golf for about 3 months now and have been easily averaging 42 miles per gallon. Most of my driving has been between 60-65 mph on interstate or state highways. I have found that my foot takes a greater toll on my mileage than simply relying on cruise control. The only disconcerting experience I have had is with the fan that comes on to cool the engine if it is too hot when I end a trip. The disconcerting part is that it has happened only twice and each time there didn't seem to me to be any special reason why the engine should have been hotter than on other trips. At any rate, a check at my VW service department has assured me that everything is just fine. I know it is ridiculous to criticize a car about its cup holders, but once again the German engineers don't seem to take convenience of the driver in consideration when placing the cup holders. In the New Beetle I traded in, the cup holders were too low, in front of the parking brake, and were so far under the dash that I had to be careful about what size cup I purchased. In the new Golf, the latter two issues are not a concern, but the cupholders are now so far back between the front seats that it is awkward for the driver and passenger to reach the cups. Again, I expect to take heat for this petty complaint, but it is something that impacts my drive to work everyday. I'd buy another Golf TDI in a minute though it will never have the personality of the VW New Beetle I reluctantly traded in after nearly 12 years of ownership."
