Vehicle Overview

Redesigned last year, the Passat family sedan reflects Volkswagen's bigger and bolder styling direction, which consumers may also recognize in the Jetta sedan. They look similar, but the Passat is larger than the Jetta and has a larger footprint than the previous-generation Passat. With seating for five, it competes with midsize sedans like the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Kia Optima.

New for 2013

SE models and above get a new center console with rear air vents and new cupholders while the SEL gains a backup camera.

Exterior

VW says the redesign for 2012 included a "predominance of horizontal body elements." The outside has sharp lines from front to back, replacing the somewhat soft lines of the previous Passat. It's an all-new look also seen on the Jetta, and elements like the grille are similar to those on the Golf and Touareg SUV. Exterior features include:

  • Standard 16-inch wheels; 17- and 18-inch wheels available
  • Available power moonroof
  • Available fog lights

Interior

There's more room on the inside of the Passat than before. The additional overall length and wheelbase help increase backseat room. Interior features include:

  • Air conditioning
  • Cruise control
  • CD stereo with auxiliary input and Bluetooth streaming audio
  • 60/40-split folding backseat
  • Available navigation system

Under the Hood

The Passat's standard engine is a 2.5-liter gas inline-five-cylinder but a more powerful gas V-6 and a turbocharged diesel four-cylinder are also offered. Mechanical features include:

  • Five-cylinder makes 170 horsepower and 177 pounds-feet of torque; works with a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission
  • Diesel 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 140 hp and 236 pounds-feet of torque; teams with a six-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic
  • 3.6-liter V-6 makes 280 hp and 258 pounds-feet of torque and drives a six-speed dual-clutch automatic

Safety

Safety features include:

  • Antilock brakes
  • Electronic stability system
  • Side-impact airbags for the front seats
  • Side curtain airbags
